Note: According to Wikipedia, the S.S. Indigirka left Magadan for Vladivostok with "39 crew, 249 fishermen and their families, 50 prisoners under guard, and 835 prisoners with technical skills who had been released to work for the war effort." Most of the prisoner/workers were under lock and trapped when the ship turned over. The Captain was executed. The NKVD Chief in charge of the prisoner/workers was given an eight-year sentence.

Note: Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and the Ukraine gained their independence from the Russian Empire in 1917 with the abdication of Czar Nicholos II. All but Finland were later annexed by the revolutionary Bolsheviks. At first, in 1917, the Bolsheviks (world revolutionaries, many of whom were later liquidated by Stalin) operated out of Moscow and slowly but methodically expanded outward, eventually forming the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, with Russia as the center of gravity. Finland took advantage of its 22 years of freedom to improve and consolidate its political, economic, and military position, thus managing to avoid being "swallowed" by Russia.
