I agree. Translated in a haste so I put "distributed" instead of "classified".peeved wrote:Maybe:

Yeah the text is rather difficult, I've managed to understand most of it. Just some parts, although I'm not a Finnish speaking person so it's all out of books and online translation sites.
But this one, I understand the middle one as being Slaughter Cape (Tapponiemi, along that lines) are the other names readable?
Thanks

Doctor's scribble just made it look odd and the other writer with a coherent S (but wrong KIA date) confused me.

Poventsa - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Povenets
Maaselkä - a station (Rus. Maselgskaya) along the Murmansk Railway about 30km north of Karhumäki (Rus. Medvezhyegorsk) where Finnish offensive finally ran out of steam in 1941. Finns also called the isthmus between lakes Onega (Fin. Ääninen) and Segozero (Fin. Seesjärvi) Maaselkä Isthmus.
Tapponiemi
A nickname for a cape in Lake Onega near Poventsa, where Finns in early 1942 caused great losses to a Sovet ski brigade. The cape's official name was Suurniemi (Great Cape), and was later renamed to Marskinniemi (Marshal's Cape) after Mannerheim visited the area.
Vienan Kar. (= Karjala)
English name White Karelia, roughly the region west of the White Sea and south of the Kola Peninsula.

Thanks for that Mikko and Peeved
I was also wondering if the medal he was awarded would also have a clasp, or was that only for the Isämmaa 1941-45 medal. Would he have only been awarded the Medal of Liberty, 2nd class? Or this medal too. Just wondered as I may look into buying replica medals in replacement for what he was given
Thanks

The Continuation War Commemorative Medal was issued about ten years after the war. Everybody taking part in the war could apply for one. There were also army unit commemorative crosses. You can obtain the original medals at fairly low prices.
Re: Researching Finnish Winter War casualty - Urho Vienonen
Ah okay thanks!! I am also trying to track his father who was also killed in the war, the oldest Vienonen killed in ww2 was a man called Sem Armas Vienonen born in 1902. He is possibly Uhro's father but I am not sure as he died in 1940 and so he was mentioned as being Urho's "Lähin omainen" on the Sotilaskantakortti page. Any leads I can go on? I could contact the archives again, but that'll cost another €20. But I will if it's the only way of getting this info
Thanks

Re: Researching Finnish Winter War casualty - Urho Vienonen
According to http://kronos.narc.fi/menehtyneet/index ... raportti=1 private Sem Armas Vienonen (second machinegun company of infantry regiment 62) died 8th of march 1940 at Tali. Unit's war diary from that date http://digi.narc.fi/digi/view.ka?kuid=1510927 does not mention anyone KIA, six men are wounded and two are missing.
Re: Researching Finnish Winter War casualty - Urho Vienonen
Thanks for that! Yeah I am thinking about contacting the church in the town of Ypäjä to see if they can help. I'll write a letter to them or email them in English and maybe get it translated into Swedish too, not sure if they'll understand it but I'll have a go!
Urho Johannes had a uncle called Urho Emil Born 15/5/1897 Ypäjä and Executed 13/5/1918 Toijalan vankileiri.
So I could trace the father through him, but I'll have to see
Thanks

Have you found the web page of Ypäjä parish. I think they understand English better than Swedish.

There are also two photos of the war grave section of the grave yard.

Hi Seppo
Thanks for those links! I emailed them last night, so hopefully they might be able to help. I am in Sweden at the moment and I am hoping to go over to Ypäjä on Friday so they might have records I can look at in person. Hopefully!

I drove past Ypäjä on Sunday and visited the military graves there.
