Re: Finnish sotilaspassi.
Conscript service began at 12. Prikaati ("12th Brigade") on 2 April 1941. His skills in the military arts were rated as good. He gave his oath on 6 June 1941. He finished his conscript service as light-machine gun gunner (crossed over) or infantry rifleman. He was considered to be most suitable as light-machine gun gunner.
He was transferred over to the first battalion of Jalkaväkirykmentti 12 ("Infantry Regiment 12") to Kiestinki front on 16 July 1941 and stayed with the unit until 10 October 1944. Then he was transferred to 16. Sotilaspoliisijoukkue ("16th Military Police Platoon") and stayed with it at least until 16 November 1944.
He received following awards:
- 2. luokan vapaudenmitali on 31 March 1943 ("Medal of Freedom, 2nd Class").
- 1. luokan vapaudenmitali on 31 May 1943 ("Medal of Freedom, 1st Class").
- Muistomitali 41-45 in 1957 ("Commemorative Medal of the War 1941-1945").

Re: Finnish sotilaspassi.
His profession is mentioned there (1947) as a workman/manual laborer and his rank being private 1st class/lance corporal.
A bit intetresting is that the military passport is prepinted 196 for to be used in the 60's, but the 6 there is written over with 47 ?
At the service data he is mentioned to have served as a LMG gunner and a military police.
Regards, Juha

I read it so that the over written LMG gunner text was at first written at a wrong row. His branch of service was infantry, and rifle units within that.Mangrove wrote: He finished his conscript service as light-machine gun gunner (crossed over) or infantry rifleman.

My grandmother said that it's not the orginal book, wich can explain I guess.
He served during the Winter war as well.
We know very little about his history during the war, as he never mentioned anything about it,
but she remembered when she was a child that he sometimes was called in to do some work after the war.
I am trying to get as much info as possible.
Regards.
Svein,
Re: Finnish sotilaspassi.
In that case, you should order copy of his military service records ("kantakortti") via mail from The National Archives in Helsinki. You may then follow his footsteps by e.g. browsing through the digitised unit war diaries at digi.narc.fi.S.Steiner wrote: He served during the Winter war as well.

Re: Finnish sotilaspassi.
No, it doesn't matter. There are two kind of military service records, public and secret. Everyone can order anyone's public records from the National Archive. Public records contain basically everything but the medical records and some appraisals. Secret records are only made public after 50 years has passed from the death of the person. Even his relatives can't get the secret records before that date.S.Steiner wrote: Do you think it matters that i am a Norwegian citizen?

I sent them an Email.
I shall search on Google for information about the 12th Brigade/Infantry Regiment 12.
Thank you for the help!
Re: Finnish sotilaspassi.
Hello!
JR 12 would be the "Jänkäjääkärit", right? Should be lots of information about them, though mostly in Finnish I would imagine.
Quick look to the Finnish wiki mentions their (I & III/JR 12) places of battle as Salla -> Alakurtti -> Kiestinki -> Karhumäki -> Poventsa -> Ihantala.
They also took part in the Lapland War.

Teemu S
