Finnish soldiers - prisoners of war?

#1

Post by jacobselin » 02 Sep 2016, 18:46

Good evening!

On behalf of my grandmother I´ve been searching for information about her brother that fought in the continuation war.

His name was Nils Rafael Fallenius and he was reported missing in combat on the 10.06.1944 in "Suur Kaljala".

The most likely scenario is that he was killed in battle that same day. However, there is a possibility that he was captured and becoming a prisoner of war.

Now to my question. Is there a list or archive that contains information about Finnish soldiers that were prisoners of war in the Soviet Union?

I hope someone can help med and my grandmother!

Kiitos!

Only recently the National Archives of Finland received 837 Winter War POW cards from Russian archives. It is of course possible that some day new information on Continuation War POW's emerges from the Soviet era records.

I think the search engine would mention, if he is known to have died as POW. The Soviet Union only has released the names of those, who have died after having arrived in a POW camp. Those who were executed or died in hospitals or in transport before arriving a POW camp, are only known from the reports of surviving POW's. The Finnish government has several times supplied a list of names of possible POW's asking their fate, but no answer from the Soviet/Russian side.

Okey thanks for your replies!

It might be worth mentioning that the reason for my interest in finding an archive over POW's comes through the kantakortii that I ordered. There I found a paper marked as "secret" which described the situation when my relative whent missing. As a last statement, the author could not rule out the possibility of Nils Fallenius being taken as a POW.

The National Archive database tells he was initially declared as missing in action, but later declared as killed in action and buried (in absentia) in the municipality of Lohja. The declaration was usually made by the district court of the region where the person lived. There might be some additional information in the records of the district court as the law required some proof of the death (e.g. a fellow prisoner testified he had died in a POW camp) before the person could be declared death in absentia.
