Fallenius, Gunnar Arvid - Never forgotten

Hello!

First of all I want to thank everyone on this forum for being so polite and helpful towards me in the past. I stumbled across this forum when I started researching my relatives experiences from the Winter War & the Continuation War. I`ve just received their Military records ( which you guys helped me with) and It´s been great for me and my family to retrieve some of our families history.

I have also been searching some war diaries in search of more information about them, especially the time of their deaths. But I have now faced some problems that I would need som assistance with.

The person that I´m interested in is Fallenius, Gunnar Arvid ( 31/3 1922 - 18/4 1942 ). In his Kantakortii it says that he belonged to JR 61 but were transported to JR 13 and then dying in "Shemenski". I´ve been trying to search the war diaries for this event but since I´m new to this and don´t understand Finnish It´s rather difficult. If anyone could point me in the right direction on where to find the right war diares or if anyone know about the events on 18/4 1942 at " Shemenski" it would be greatly appreciated.

/ Best regards Jacob

Hello Jacob

You can find the JR13 war diaries (which are written in Swedish) here:
http://digihakemisto.appspot.com/index_ ... 3%A4kirjat

Use your browser's search function to search for Jalkaväkirykmentti 13 (the site's own search function doesn't seem to work).

Esikunta = HQ
Komppania = Company
Pataljoona = Battalion
Kranaatinheitinkomppania = Mortar Company

It would help if there would be more specific information on his unit (battalion, company). As to what took place at the time. There was a Soviet offensive action which lead to Finnish counter attacks in that region, that whole period become known as 'Kelirikkotaistelut' (i suppose it could be translated as 'the thaw battles')

18/4 1942:

JR 61: http://digi.narc.fi/digi/view.ka?kuid=3480432 (handwritten, in Swedish)
JR 13: http://digi.narc.fi/digi/view.ka?kuid=3435300 (handwritten, in Swedish)
Finnish GHQ reports for that date: http://digi.narc.fi/digi/view.ka?kuid=3541185 (typewritten, in Finnish)

Translating the Finnish parts related to 17.D from the GHQ report:
(part of the morning reports, i.e. events of the evening&night 17/18.4.1942) On the 17th Division's sector: Enemy attacked at 1800 west of the Lake Pogruski which forced the men from two of our bases to be pulled back. Enemy stopped at the (captured) bases.

(part of evening reports, i.e. events of the day of 18.4.1942) On the 17th Division's sector: Enemy company strength attempts of attacking east of the Vonozero - Podporozero road were stopped with artillery. In the direction of Lake Podruski our counterattacks to recapture lost bases are ongoing.

(part of morning reports for the 18/19.4.1942 night) On the 17th Division's sector: Our counterattack to retake the lost bases in the direction of Kuidosuo became to a halt due to the strong enemy fire.

I´m afraid that i don't know much more about his battalion or company.

Thanks for the links to the war diaries, I'm very grateful!

Is anyone familiar with the place "Schemenski" ?

If you mean the location:

Shemenichi, via Google Maps

If you are able to read Russian or use a tool such as a Google Translate then you can get a bit more information from ru-wiki:
Шеменичи, fi-wiki has only its name: Šelmenitša.

More in Finnish: http://www.jukkajoutsi.com/syvari.html (posted here because of the map that shows where the units were located)

Another, really large map: In Finnish, location is marked as 'Simanisto' roughly at 577 (Eastern) and 6752 (Northern).
