Hi!
Correct, the railroad bridge being target for several Soviet bombing attacks during the Winter War.
Not that difficult for you?
Anyway, your turn to post a new question.
Here some other photos from the same location:

- In the middle the railroad bridge from 1870, on the right the "new" railroad bridge (THE Soviet target during the Winter War) from 1925 (the older bridge then changed to road traffic use.
On the left the new road traffic bridge from 1985 ( the 1870 constructed bridge then once again modified, this time for pedestrian and bicycle traffic)

Unfortunately your question was not so difficult FOR ME and you know the reasons . Here is a new one. One of these soldiers became a world famous after Continuation war (SA-kuva №167358). Who is he?

Re: The official AHF Winter & Continuation War quiz thread
Hmmm...
That was not easy, but your generous hint of giving out the SA- photo number made it posssible to figure it out (at least I thik so).
The unit is mentioned there as well as most of the people at the photo.
So they being of AAA HQ ballistic office, that perhaps meaning that they had something to do with mathematics.
A little googling pointed there towards the Lieutenant at far right, Kari Karhunen.
So is he the man you were after?
Regards, Juha

You are right, Juha! Kari Karhunen became famous probabilist and a mathematical statistician. He is best known for the Karhunen–Loève theorem and Karhunen–Loève transform. These scientific positions are a basement for morden radar detection systems, adaptive optics etc. When I was a student, it was my favorite tool. Ball is on your side

Thanks Swing,
Karhunen (and another guy at your photo, Olli Lokki) being mentioned here too:
The next question, as yours did, also has some "personal twist".
Type name/manufacturer of this:
Karhunen (and another guy at your photo, Olli Lokki) being mentioned here too:
http://www.histdoc.net/lauttasaari/airraid.htmlThe improvement of Helsinki air defence begun already in 1941. It was intensified in 1942, at the time when the Soviet strategic air forces (ADD, Авиация дальнего действия), directly under Stalin's command and led by Air Marshall Aleksandr Golovanov (1904-1975), had begun their bombing missions on Finnish cities. The defensive tactics aimed at preventing the advancing bombers to drop their loads on the city area. For this purpose Capt. Pentti Paatero planned a set of defensive rings around Helsinki. They all had the geographical center of the downtown city as the center point. At each evenly numbered distance in kilometers, up to 14 km from the center point, each ring was divided into 1-1.5 km wide arcs. The barriers (columns) thus formed were given descriptive numbers. Each column was then subdivided into slices of 200 m up to a height of 7,5 km. For each one of these slices all relevant gunnery data was precalculated. A lot of mathematicians (Leo Sario, Pentti Laasonen, Kari Karhunen, Olli Lokki and others) and artillery experts were gathered to make these calculations. Later the German radars (then called Funkmessgerät), of which the Finns learned in 1942 and finally got in 1943, were playing a pivotal role in this.
The next question, as yours did, also has some "personal twist".
