Thank You Juha. A new Joutselkä monument is now in Roihuvuori in Helsinki. Have to go see sometime, and maybe shed a few tears watching the monument.

And a question follows:

Excluding desant groups and the garrison in Hanko, name the westernmost point from Finnish eastern land border, which Soviet infantry forces reached during Continuation War.

10488
14718
14738
14753
14784
16215
165346
411993

Numbers, numbers, numbers...

A. What are these numbers?

B. And when you have figured it out, whats the specific connection between them?

With regards

10488 = MT-220 (Finnish codes)
14718 = MT-201
14738 = MT-205
14753 = MT-212
14784 = MT-216
16215 = MT-445
165346 = ? (according to my old book 165356 = MT-468)
411993 = MT-405

Esa wrote:A. What are these numbers?
German Werke Nummers for Messerschmitt 109G planes delivered to Finland
B. And when you have figured it out, whats the specific connection between them?
They are the Messerschmitts with what W/O Oiva Tuominen scored 13(?) kills 1943-44
?

Congratulations again to a correct answer.

It´s the Werke numbers of the MT-planes with wich W/O O. Tuominen scored his kills with that plane type.

(maybe 165346 should be 165356, think we have the same source SIH vol 6 from 1976, so I probably just wrote the 5 as a 4 [and have not my books at hand at moment to check], well you figured out it should be MT-468).

So, over to Juha and Myllykoski again...

Is this the story about 'bombing' a Soviet decoy airfield and its wooden dummy planes?

BTW, I'm very sceptical of this story's veracity... it's being told of all the air forces of the WWII.

According to the "Lentäjän Albumi I (?)" (Pilots Album) by Toivo Sorsa your answer is correct. Over to you.

When the same story is told all over the world, it's usually a good indicator of an urban legend, but if you have pictures to show... 8O

OK, my question:

Several Finnish senior officers lost a son or two KIA. But one Finnish general lost his wife to direct enemy fire. Who was the general and what were the circumstances of his wife's death?

And Hyvää Juhannusta/Happy Midsummer to all you people!

Just a guess:
a) Väinö Palojärvi
b)his wife was killed by Soviet "partisans" ???

Sorry for taking my time to answer. First I celebrated the juhannus, then suffered the consequences.

Yes, Juha got the answer right. Greta Palojärvi was killed on 4 July 1942 when her bus was ambushed by Soviet partisans in Murtovaara, Kuusamo (in Finnish territory). She was a high member of Sotilaskotiliitto (soldiers' canteen organization). On the same bus were also Mrs Toini Jännes, the chairperson of the aforementioned organization, Mrs Toini Aflecht, also a member of the organization as well as korpraali V. I. Moilanen and korpraali T. I. Rossinen. They all were killed.

As for the wooden bombs, see here: http://www.snopes.com/military/woodbomb.htm

Thanks.
IIRC I have once read about the Palojärvi's from "Kyllä Täällä Kaatuakin Voidaan" by Martti Turtola.

A new one, whats special about the (begining of) next marriage of Maj Gen Palojärvi?
