The ice road was opened 17.2.40 and traffic continued to 25.3.40.Allthoug the importance of that road was quite small,it however delivered some much needed at-gunns and ammunition.The moral effect was something to be recon also.Hatts off for brave drivers who did drove upon tricky ice.

Ps.Here's a sample of Kari Suomalainen's art.It's a drawing of reservist who did join Finnish army with Kari in spring 40.Uniforms were in short supply and many men came with their own gear.This character was with:

-Felt hat with cockade
-"Skeleton" jacket m/22 of cavalry
-"Millionaire" trousers with stripes
-Military boots

It was said that he was quite a sight.I belive.

On the sea front war began at 07.45 by aerial and naval bombardment of the outer islands. The personnel of Lavansaari Coast Guard station tried to escape to Someri, but their motor boat AV 45 was sunk by a Soviet destroyer. All four men lost their lives.

Matti E. Mäkelä writes in his book "Miehiä Merellä" (Men at Sea) that the Coast Guard personel were ordered to stay at the island that long that they could report about the possible Soviet invasion. They obeyed the order, and left the island after sending a radio message:
"The Russians are entering the island ,
we will not surrender,
goodbye"

My apologies for the delay. It's been a day!

During the Winter War, field post regulations called for all mail to be marked in one of two ways. These markings were to be color coded.

What were the markings, and what were the colors?

Actually Topspeed, according to my source, you're half right. Kenttapostia in violet is correct.

Topspeed's answer was correct for personal mail. The other marking is in reference to non-personal mail.

This was a hard one, but this should be the answer:

Personal mail should be marked with "Kenttäpostia" in violet ink.

Official/non-personal mail should be marked "Sotilasasia" in red ink.
