The operating country in question also (in addition to the earlier mentioned Bristol Pegasus and Armstrong Siddeley Panther) eqipped the plane type with Hispano-Suiza 12 Nbr, Wright R-1750 Cyclone, BMW 132A Hornet and Armstrong Siddeley Tiger engines.

Quite a nice looking Finnish-built Blackburn Ripon with the Hispano Suiza V-12 photographed at Turkinsaari in the summer of 1937. This engine had 650 hp when the Bristol Pegasus II had 610 hp and the Armstrong Siddley Panther only 525 hp. The Finnish Air Force decided not to upgrade the engines and so this is the only Ripon to have an inline engine. Photo from "Suomen Ilmavoimat 1928-1940" by Keskinen, Partonen and Stenman. 25 were produced under licence at the Finnish Aircraft Factory. These were powered with a number of different radial engines; the pattern aircraft had a 530 hp (400 kW) Bristol Jupiter VII, the next seven had 480 hp (360 kW) Gnome Rhone Jupiter VI, followed by eight with 535 hp (399 kW) Armstrong Siddeley Panther engines and the final ten with 580 hp (430 kW) Bristol Pegasus engines

And for this photo below: the world's only existing Blackburn Ripon airplane at Päijät-Häme Aviation Museum (Päijät-Hämeen Ilmailumuseo). This specific airplane, RI-140, is from the II-series built by the State Aircraft Factory in Finland, and was delivered to MeriLentoLaivue squadron on 12.11.1931. Its history includes a forced landing on 1.11.1941. It was repaired and continued to fly maritime patrols until it was passed to the Airforce Depot 31.8.1943 because its poor condition. The plane was struck off on 20.9.1943, with 1261 hours 30 minutes flight time.

And here's another photo of the same aircraft from a different angle

Ilmavoimat Blackburn Ripon preparing to take off

The final of the three scene collections from the Meidän Poikamme Ilmassa (1934) movie. Highlighted in this clip is the Blackburn Ripon float plane.

In the Winter War, the Ripons flew 277 sorties (225 of these being reconnaissance). In the Continuation War, they dropped 3.95 million leaflets, transported 1,593 wounded, carried out 20 bombing sorties & number of anti-sub patrols and escorts. The last missions were flown in 1944.

Hey, that thread somehow looks familiar.

And on to my question. Continuing with the Finnish aviation theme...who are the three people in the car and what activity are they participating in?

They are towing something, perhaps a glider.

Well... I was counting on you :)

Standing, Aili Heikinaro (former Hedström, later by marriage Smirnoff) "die Hanna of Finland" one of the first female glide pilots in Finland
At drivers seat, Kustaa Aulin
At back seat "Pasi" Jääskeläinen.

Some 1937 Jämijärvi glider event?

Yes, they used the rear wheel as a winch to launch gliders. Here are a couple more photos of the same car.

Yes indeed. Jamilla: Photo taken in 1937. Miss Aili Heikinaro, christened "Finnish die Hannaksikin" stands in the new winch-Packard holding an outstretched signal flag. She was the first female glider pilot in the country. In the driver's seat sits Vaasa Glider Club President Gustav Aulin and in the backseat is "Pasi" Jääskeläinen. Note the "guillotine" on the left front wheel.

I am impressed - you got the car! The Vaasa Gliding Club acquired its first Winch Car, a Packard, in December 1936. The Packard was an open top car, with one rear wheel replaced with a cable-drum and a “guillotine” fitted on the left front wheel to cut the rope used for towing if necessary. (The Packard was lost during the war).

If anyone wants more, Page 11 of my What If has a whole series of photos of gliding about half way down.

Over to Juha for the next question!

Thanks Nigel,

After some googling, I found the answer from here:

and here:

Now the new question.
Some of the trio of the preivious question photo did something quite unique during the Winter War.
Who and what?

Something to do with this?

Suomen ilmavoimilla oli Gamecock-koneita 17 kappaletta vuosina 1927–1944. Konetta kutsuttiin Kukoksi. Niiden tunnukset olivat GA-38 ja GA-43 - GA-58. 1920- ja 1930-luvuilla kone luokiteltiin hävittäjäkoneeksi, sittemmin tiedustelukoneeksi. Lentomestari Pasi Jääskeläinen saavutti talvisodassa tällä konetyypillä yhden ilmavoiton: hän onnistui haavoittamaan järven jäälle tankkaamaan laskeutuneen DB-3-pommittajan lentäjää niin pahasti, että kone jäi suomalaisille sotasaaliiksi.

And http://yle.fi/uutiset/talvisodan_neuvostolentajat_etsivat_hauholta_bensaa/5709103

Flight Master Pasi Jääskeläinen won an air victory in the Winter War in this type of aircraft. From what I can figure out, the DB-3 bombers ran out of fuel and landed on the ice, Jääskeläinen turned up in an old Gloster Gauntlet and managed to shoot up either the plane or the pilots so that at least one of the DB-3s was left intact and captured by the Finns?
