No way. It's your turn again. I didn't know the correct answer and got it by means of cheating. Screen capture was posted by me only to show that the photo contained clear answer inside. I talked about it recently but now had to show how it looks.
BarSeek wrote:HINT. SA-Kuva images (saved in high resolution) contain caption text inside the image file (in EXIF data). One must keep it in mind when posting sa-photos in this thread. In Opera browser you can just right-click the photo above and choose "Image properties" to see the answer (or save image to local disk and see EXIF data in any image viewer). There must be an option in image editing software to save edited file without EXIF data.

OK, as you wish.
I still think that you did not cheat, you just used all the info the photo contained.

Anyway, another try, here another vessel to be identified:

Everstiluutnantti Susitaival (his back to the picture) and komentaja Göransson are following a smoke screen exercise.
Yeah, the photo was easy to find, but I haven't got a clue of the bloody ship!

With best, J-P :milwink:

Is it gunboat Ilmari?
Finnish navy tradition: if it floats, put a veapon on it and call it a warship...

Hi Pekka,

Yep.
Correct answer, well done.
The 40mm Vickers and 20mm Madsen visible might have helped?

Some other SA-photos about it, like:

JSdia037, JSdia040 (quiz) JSdia041, JSdia738,some between # 97050-97066 and 97118
Also some between 63873-66931 and 154885-154892 ?

Your turn next Ruotsinsalmi

Thanks Juha!

Yes, the Vickers was the lead.

Here is my question: After Tanne Ost finns got two german landing crafts as booty, MFP F 177 and B 35 Pmot, their finnish names became Seili and Lonna.
So, what is this in SA-photo, it is not neither of them. Name the vessel!

Okey, a hint:
Part of the original name is visible in the photo, of course germans gave it a new identification...

Hi,

Seems to be a good and tough one.
I've seen the photo many times and earlier always thought that the visible "Dienst V" would have been it's name.

Let's make it easier:
The original name was Eildienst V, built at BSG Erlenbach yard 1937, 55 m x 7 m x 2,4 m, 602 t, 375 hp.'
Kriegsmarine converted it to an auxiliary landing craft, and it belonged to 24.Landungsflottille and was destroyed at Suursaari during operation Tanne Ost.
So, what was it's name in Kriegsmarine?

Maybe this was too difficult...
The name in KM was B 1 PMot. AFAIK the B means the harbour, where it was taken to Kriegsmarine use or where it was modified to military use.
B is Boulogne, A is Antwerpen, C Calais, D Dunkerque, H Le Havre, O Ostende and R is Rotterdam.
PMot is prahm, motorisiert (barge, motorised)
Germans lost 3 PMots in Tanne Ost, this one, B 31 PMot (ex. dutch Mowan) and B 35 PMot, which later became finnish Lonna.
According to war diary of Itä-Suomen Rannikkoprikaati/Merikomentaja (East Finlands Coastal Prigade/Sea commander) some of the ex. german landingcrafts could have been able to rescue, because there is a mention:
"Lieutnant commander (komentajakapteeni) Fabritius announced, that he can get two barges easily up if he can get two pontoons in his use."

So, maybe someone can shoot a new question?

What is the primary purpose of this device designed by a department of the Päämaja?

You are on to it, but that is not the right answer.

Really a wild guess. Is this some sort of a panorama camera?
