Thanks, Juha! I will edit my post accordingly.

 BTW, moderators -- would it be a good idea to sticky this thread? Or is it bad etiquette to suggest a thread you started yourself? :|

I had never hear of this before but could find proves that it really happened as odd it may sound.

The old HQ/1st Jäger Brigade became HQ/Armoured Division in June 1942. Already in winter 1942 HQ/2nd Jäger Brigade had become HQ/Armoured Brigade. As far as I know the suspended HQ/Jäger Battalion X (I don't remember which one but it was IIRC 5th or 6th) was expanded to a new HQ/Jäger Brigade in May 1942.

According to "Suomen sota 1941 - 1945 Vol. VI" page 161: "On 17.10.1943 HQ/JR 46 moved to Äänislinna [Petrozavodsk] where it became HQ/Jäger Brigade." Amazing info Mikko! The question is what happened to the "original" HQ of the new Jäger Brigade?

My notes:

Finnish Regiment Commanders in June 1941 were basically Chiefs of Civil Guard Districts. Most of them took the command of their regiment formed by the Civil Guard District after the mobilization had started (between 17. - 25.6.1941, typically on 18.6.1941). Their successors in Civil Guard Districts although took the command officially on 25.6.1941. It is worth mentioning that many of the original Commanders returned later back to their "peace-time job" (usually in some Civil Guard District) or Military Province, training centre or military school. During the war many older Commanders were replaced with newly promoted younger ones although some remained in front service until the end of the war.

JR 33 / 12.Pr.
12th Brigade was commanded by Col. Per Ekholm and later (since (when) ?.42-) Col. August Mäkiniemi. (Chief of Staff was initially Maj. M. Koskenmies succeded by Maj. Eino Lassila who after the war became Colonel in US Army in 1968.)

JR 44
Yrjö Tuompo

JR 49 & JR 50
Eino (Ilmari) Järvinen (there are at least one other with the same first first name (Eino Iisakki) so I think the second first name is good to mention)

JR 56
Martti Vihma

JR 57
Guy Arto (usually this is used, his second first name was "Elie")

JR 60
Harry or Toivo Kinnunen (?)

JR 61
Martin Berg (anyway I'd suggest "Martin" as his first name)

At the beginning of the Continuation War JR 61 was a separate regiment under the command of Naval Forces. Together with Light Artillery Battalion 15 it was at Porvoo - Tuusula area protecting the capital city Helsinki. Regiment replaced JR 55 in 17th Division when it was moved to East Karelia on 18 July 1941. JR 55 stayed at Hanko Group and was suspended later in 1941 like told.

Good job Mikko! I made some checks to confirm your data but didn't find anything else to "complain" (different sources can contain printing mistakes and there may be different kinds of information on dates). :)

Thanks Harri, although most of the credit belongs to Mikko Kohvakka's article that's my main source (well, it's Mikko anyway... :P ).
JR 33 / 12.Pr.
12th Brigade was commanded by Col. Per Ekholm
What's your source here? My notes have Col. Per Ole Ekholm commanding the Jalkaväkirykmentti 47 from 18 June to 19 December 1941, then 12. Divisioona until January 1942 and finally Military Province and District of Helsinki until 1945. No mention on 12. Prikaati or Jalkaväkirykmentti 33.

Now, of all Finnish infantry regiments of the Continuation War there are only the 'specials', JR 101 and JR 200 left. Stay tuned...

Sorry, I forgot him. His name is: Theodor (Teuvo) Kosti Vartiovaara (in some sources Wartiovaara).
Mikko H. wrote:What's your source here? My notes have Col. Per Ole Ekholm commanding the Jalkaväkirykmentti 47 from 18 June to 19 December 1941, then 12. You are right. I have a mistake in my notes: it should be 12th Division not Brigade. He of course didn't have nothing to do with JR 33, I just "bundled" these two units together. Thanks for correcting.

Col. P. Ekholm was a Commander of Helsinki Military Province since 19.2.1942 and also Chief of Helsinki Civil Guard District between 17.7.1942 - 4.12.1944. Most likely between (mid-)January and 19.2.1942 he was on vacation.

----

I can reveal my excellent source book too. It is the Person Index [Henkilöhakemisto] in the History of the Continuation War Vol. 6. It is one of the best collection of officer names I have seen (there are although only names mentioned in the book and there is no mentions of their units) and what's best there are most promotion dates too. I scanned the pages and added these (= "pictures") to a Word file, so I got a very handy index I can always check officers' names and promotion dates. Other sources I have are my notes from the (most) Jäger Officers, Cadet Officers and separate Officer Courses I sent to you (I miss only Artillery Officers) although they are rather inaccurate and contain lots of mistakes and inaccuracies. At least in my copies I have bolded the one of the first names a person used if the first first name was not used.

My lists on Civil Guard / Home Troops Commanders and Chiefs (on my Internet page) contain also accurate dates which can be cross checked with other information. It is although difficult to check all officers through like this. For example the mentioned Col. T. Vartiovaara took the command of North Häme Military Province on 1.2.1942 and returned also back to his peace-time job as the Chief of Jyväskylä Civil Guard District on 18.9.1942. It was not quite uncommon to hold two posts like this but in my notes these staffs were although at Tampere and Jyvaskylä and it is a mystery how he could do his job in practise? :P The first post was although relatively insignificant because the war-time staff consisted only of a few persons (AFAIK).

Thanks for the info, Harri.

When I was in a more active phase of research I had all those books and more loaned from the local libraries, and based my notes on them. But back then regimental commanders were not of interest for me, and I didn't take notes on them. Now I'm just plain too lazy to carry all those book home again...

Jalkaväkirykmentti 101
Infantry Regiment 101

majuri Kunto Karmo 28 April 1942 - 24 May 1942
everstiluutnantti [45] Yrjö Hanste 24 May 1942 - 5 December 1943

[45] promoted to eversti on 16 September 1942

Formed on 28 April 1942 out of Erillinen Pataljoona 21, 22 and 23 (Separate Battalion 21, 22 & 23), punishment formations for offenders against military discipline and political prisoners. (Note that these were not used for near-suicidal missions like e.g. the Soviet punishment battalions, but for rather ordinary front service where an offender could redeem himself with good service.) Military offenders were volunteers, political prisoners not.

ErP 21 was founded in August 1941. Political prisoners were removed to a separate labor company in late September, after a number of them deserted to the enemy during the first battle. Thereafter the battalion & regiment consisted only of military offenders, and fought reasonably well. ErP 22 was founded in March 1942 and ErP 23 later in the year. When Jalkaväkirykmentti 101 was being deactivated, a fourth battalion, ErP 24 was founded out of the regiment's personnel replacement center (henkilöstötäydennyskeskus).

Jalkaväkirykmentti 101 was deactivated in November - December 1943 and its battalions transferred to other units as ordinary infantry battalions. E/JR 101 (HQ of Infantry Regiment 101) became E/21.Pr (HQ of 21st Brigade) on 6 December 1943. ErP 24 was the only unit of the former JR 101 to be incorporated in the 21.Pr as IV/21.Pr (IV Battalion of the 21st Brigade).

There were also "ordinary" criminals. AFAIK all of them were volunteers (except officers). JR 101 was not a penal unit. Political prisoners were rare in JR 101, most of them had been in Er.P 21 in 1941.

Separate Battalion 23 (Erillinen pataljoona 23, Er.P 23) which had only two infantry companies, MG company and lacked light mortars was formed since 10.1.1942 using the additional fourth infantry companies of the other two battalions (Er.P 21 and 22) of JR 101. Er.P 23 was initially only subordinated to JR 101.

On 1.1.1943 both Er.P 21 and 22 were re-organized to normal regimental infantry battalions. The still incomplete Er.P 23 was organized to a full battalion strength since 26.3.1943 and was attached to Infantry Regiment 101.

Regiment composition of JR 101 was suspended on 5.12.1943 and its units were attached to other formations during the winter and spring 1944. Regiment HQ / JR 101 became HQ / 21st Brigade on 1.1.1944 when a new brigade was formed.

Since 1.12.1943 trained volunteer Estonians. Chief of Jv.Koul.K 26 was Lt.Col. E. Kuusela since 10.1943.

But when was JR 200 suspended? Only 150 Estonians stayed in Finland when the regiment was disbanded on 19.8.1944. Did JR 200 remain active after that?

I'm inclined to think that 'Karno' is a typo for Karmo (Kohvakka is still my source here). According to your lists, Kunto Mikko Karmo was commander of the III/JR 60 in 1941-42. JR 60 was disbanded at the same time in the Spring of 1942 as JR 101 was being formed, and they were both located in Maaselkä Isthmus. So it's very likely that our 'Karno' is indeed Maj. Kunto Karmo.
There were also "ordinary" criminals. AFAIK all of them were volunteers (except officers).
According to Jukka Kulomaa's Käpykaartiin? 1941-1944. Sotilaskarkuruus Suomen armeijassa jatkosodan aikana p. 225 the only 'ordinary' criminals (as opposed to offenders who served in military) were couple of tens of men in penal servitude (parikymmentä kuritushuonevankia) from Helsinki Central Prison who were accepted in service in October 1941. Initially the only military offenders who were accepted were men who had offended against military discipline. But in late 1943 c. hundred soldiers who had been condemned of violent crimes were accepted. About 30 of them had been condemned of manslaughter or aggravated assault leading to death.

I think so too. JR 60 belonged to 1st Division like JR 101 since 1.6.1942 (subordinated). So, these units like you said were regionally at the very same area on Maaselkä Isthmus.

In Topi Vaara's book "Pärmin pirut" [Pärmis's Devils] is stated that Er.P 21 was formed of "volunteer ordinary criminals from Pelso and Sukeva prisons". Additionally there was the group of political prisoners ("ryömäläiset", Communists) who after bad experiences were sent back to prisons. Battalion Commander Major Nikke Pärmi was personally very pleased that his battalion consisted of "qualified killers" who did their job well in combat.

I think military prioners arrived since late 1941 or early 1942. I have not managed to find out if battalions of JR 101 were similar in this respect or were certain battalions for example "supported" by certain prisons or manned with different kind of prisoners. Anyway battalions of JR 101 (except Er.P 24) became later normal regimental battalions and I have not found any special mentions on these. Er.P 21 which became III/JR 5 of 4th Division faced its old nickname on Karelian Isthmus when Soviet propagandists greeted battalion as "Pärmi's Devils".

One note on first names:

JR 44
Lt.Col. Ilmari Elis Rytkönen
(Did he used his second first name? For example "Suomen Sota" which is not always quite consistent uses his name in a form "I. Rytkönen"). In uncertain cases I'd use the first first name unless the it is quite sure what first name person self used. Sometimes a nickname or a "modified" name was used (example Major Nikolai "Nikke" Pärmi).

Here is the list of known Regiment Commanders (Cadet officers only) who used other than their first first name or a modified first name:
Capt./Maj. (42) Johannes (Jukka) Ahi
Maj./Lt.Col.(43) Joachim Zachris Duncker
Lt.Col./Col.(41) Ernst Gustaf Waldemar Ehrnrooth
Lt.Col./Col.(42) Hans Olof von Essen (usually with "-": H.-O.)
Maj./Lt.Col.(42) Wolfgang (Wolf) Hallstén Halsti
Maj./Lt.Col.(41)/Col.(44) Bernhard (Perttu) Heimolainen
Maj./Lt.Col.(41)/Col.(44) Vilho Olavi Huhtala
Maj./Lt.Col.(41)/Col.(44) Arvi Akseli Kurenmaa
Lt.Col./Col.(42) Sulo Eero Laaksonen (<- this was actually the most surprising!)
Maj./Lt.Col.(42) Carl Otto Lilius
Maj./Lt.Col.(44) Sven Oskar Lindgren
Maj./Lt.Col.(44) Vilho Jalo Kalervo Loimu
Lt.Col./Col.(42) John Valter Voldemar Nordgren
Maj. Karl-Erik Oljemark
Lt.Col. Carl Gustaf Palmgren

Officer courses:
Col. Aloys Josef August Kuistio
Lt.Col./Col. Jaakko Sakari Simelius
Lt.Col./Col.(5.3.44) Otto Gustaf (Gösta) Snellman
