Finnish regiment commanders
My computer's up and running again, so next we'll go through the Finnish infantry regiments during the Winter War. My sources are not as thorough as for the Continuation War, so again, all comments and corrections are more than welcome! It might be that any independent regiments are missing. Main source this time is Tarmo Metsälä: Isänmaan puolesta. Suomalaisten taistelujen tiet ja tappiot 1939-1945.
Note that the numbers of certain units were changed on 1 January 1940 to confuse the enemy. Also note there's no continuity between similarly numbered regiments during in the Winter and Continuation Wars. For example, the famous Ässärykmentti (the Ace Regiment), recruited from Helsinki's working-class districts, was during the Winter War Jalkaväkirykmentti 11, and during the Continuation War Jalkaväkirykmentti 26.
Unless otherwise noted, all infantry regiments were activated during the mobilization in October 1939.

I have found this book a rather unreliable source due to numerous trivial mistakes (lots of name mistakes and mistakes for example in photocaptions). That kinds of mistakes make me wonder what else might be wrong in the book?Mikko H. wrote:Main source this time is Tarmo Metsälä: Isänmaan puolesta. Sorry, I don't either know the exact date.Mikko H. wrote:Jalkaväkirykmentti 16

everstiluutnantti [2] Aaro Pajari 10 October 1939 - ?

At what point did Pajari cease to command this regiment -- was it when he took command of Ryhmä Talvela on 19 February 1940? Who followed him?
Lt.Col. Tauno Viljanen was the temporary Commander between 20.12. - 24.12.1939. Pajari was also the Commander of Detachment Pajari (Osasto Pajari) of which Chief of Staff was Lt.Col. Veikko Räsänen but later in 1940 he Commanded a separate detachment at Tolvajärvi. I think Detachment Pajari was never renamed despite of the commander change?
Lt.Col./Col.(40) Kaarlo Viljanen acted as Commander's Assistant in Detachment/Group Talvela. But at the end of the Winter War commanded Separate Detachment Viljanen (Er.Os.Viljanen). For some reason this detachment is totally unknown to me.
I bet the Commander of JR 16 was some of these three Colonels but I couldn't find the answer from my files not any book I have in my disposal at the moment.

Jalkaväkirykmentti 29 / Infantry Regiment 29:
Col. Theodor Vartiovaara (also Wartiovaara) was better know as Teuvo Vartiovaara.

Lt.Col. Vilhelm Teittinen died in 1940. When exactly? And what was the reason?
Jalkaväkirykmentti 28 / Infantry Regiment 28
Col. Martti Nurmi died in a traffic accident (train crushed his car) during his leave.
Jalkaväkirykmentti 25 / Infantry Regiment 25
This is the correct date I think but at that date JR 25 (of 9th Division) became a separate Brigade Vuokko (Prikaati Vuokko) until the end of the war led by Lt.Col. Aksel Vuokko.eversti Aarne Blick 10 October 1939 - 4 December 1939

Flying regiments revisited
Since this thread was active four years ago, new books has been published about the Finnish Air Force, so I decided to make a new and improved commander list.
Lentorykmentti 1
Flying Regiment 1
eversti Yrjö Opas 1 January 1938 - 14 March 1940
everstiluutnantti Jouna Alameri 14 March 1940 - 20 May 1940
everstiluutnantti Viljo Rekola 20 May 1940 - 22 June 1941
everstiluutnantti [1] Viljo Rekola 3 May 1942 - (post-war period)
[1] promoted to eversti in 1943
Lentorykmentti 1 was formed from Lentoasema 5 (Flying Station 5) on 1 January 1938. It was disbanded just before the Continuation War on 22 June 1941 and its component squadrons operated independently. HQ was used to form Täydennyslentorykmentti (Supplementary Flying Regiment). The regiment was reformed on 3 May 1942 and operated well into the post-war period, until all flying regiments were disbanded on 1 December 1952 and most of them formed into air commands (lennosto). Lentorykmentti 1 became the new 2. Lennosto, which was renamed Satakunnan Lennosto at the beginning of 1957. It continues to operate by that name to this day.
Lentorykmentti 1 was a mixed flying regiment which during the WWII had recon, communication and fighter units under its command.
Lentorykmentti 2
Flying Regiment 2
everstiluutnantti Rainer Ahonius 1 January 1938 - 8 October 1939
everstiluutnantti [2] Richard Lorenz 8 October 1939 - 16 June 1943
everstiluutnantti [3] Raoul Harju-Jeanty 16 June 1943 - (post-war period)
[2] promoted to eversti on 16 September 1941
[3] promoted to eversti on 27 August 1944
Lentorykmentti 2 was formed from Lentoasema 1 (Flying Station 1) on 1 January 1938. The regiment operated into the post-war period, until all flying regiments were disbanded on 1 December 1952. Most of them were formed into air commands (lennosto), but not Lentorykmentti 2.
Lentorykmentti 2 was the original of the two Finnish fighter flying regiments. The other one was Lentorykmentti 3.
Lentorykmentti 3
Flying Regiment 3
everstiluutnantti Einar Nuotio 9 April 1940 - 27 May 1943
everstiluutnantti [4] Gustaf Magnusson 27 May 1943 - 17 March 1946
[4] promoted to eversti on 27 August 1944
Lentorykmentti 3 was formed just after the Winter War on 27 March 1940 using the HQ of disbanded Täydennyslentorykmentti 2 (Supplementary Flying Regiment 2). The regiment operated well into the post-war period, until all flying regiments were disbanded on 1 December 1952 and most of them formed into air commands (lennosto). Lentorykmentti 3 became the new 3. Lennosto, which was renamed Karjalan Lennosto at the beginning of 1957. It continues to operate by that name to this day.
Lentorykmentti 3 was the second Finnish fighter flying regiment, equipped with the new fighter aircraft received during and after the Winter War. It was considered the foremost fighter flying regiment form the summer of 1942 onwards.
Lentorykmentti 4
Flying Regiment 4
everstiluutnantti Lars Schalin 1 January 1938 - 11 October 1939
everstiluutnantti Toivo Somerto 11 October 1939 - 2 April 1942
everstiluutnantti [5] Olavi Sarko 2 April 1942 - 27 June 1944
everstiluutnantti Birger Gabrielsson 27 June 1944 - 4 December 1944
[5] promoted to eversti on 31 August 1942
Lentorykmentti 4 was formed from Lentoasema 6 (Flying Station 6) on 1 January 1938. The regiment operated well into the post-war period, until all flying regiments were disbanded on 1 December 1952 and most of them formed into air commands (lennosto). Lentorykmentti 4 became the new 1. Lennosto, which was renamed Hämeen Lennosto at the beginning of 1957 and Lapin Lennosto on 6 December 1974. It continues to operate by that name to this day.
Lentorykmentti 4 was the Finnish bomber flying regiment.
Lentorykmentti 5
Flying Regiment 5
everstiluutnantti Knut Ilanko 9 November 1942 - 11 October 1944
Lentorykmentti 5 was formed on 3 November 1942 and disbanded on 11 October 1944.
Lentorykmentti 5 was a mixed flying regiment, mainly flying naval recon and patrol missions for the Naval Forces. While still an Air Force unit, it was subordinated to the Naval Forces HQ. Towards the end of the war it also gained a fighter flying squadron, originally intended for night-fighting operations.
NOTE: the Swedish volunteer unit Flygflottilj 19 / Lentorykmentti 19 (see below) was briefly named Lentorykmentti 5 from 5 to 9 January 1940.

Flygflottilj 19 (Swedish name) / Lentorykmentti 19 (Finnish name) was a Swedish volunteer unit formed by the decision of the Swedish cabinet on 14 December 1939. Its original name was Flygflottilj 101 (F101), changed to Lentorykmentti 5 (not to be confused with the later Finnish unit of the same name; see above) on 5 January 1940, until receiving its final name Flygflottilj 19 (F19) on 9 January 1940. Unit's maximum strength was 12 Gloster Gladiator (J8A) fighters and 4 Hawker Hart (B4A) light bombers. It flew its first operational flights in Finnish Lapland on 12 January 1940. After the end of the Winter War the remaining F19 aircraft returned to Sweden between 29 March and 8 April 1940.

Re: Finnish regiment commanders
To the list of Continuation War infantry regiments can be added the three following contingency regiments:
Jalkaväkirykmentti 77
Infantry Regiment 77
Jalkaväkirykmentti 88
Infantry Regiment 88
Jalkaväkirykmentti 99
Infantry Regiment 99
Once the first serious peace-feelers between Finland and the USSR were initiated in early 1944, Finns started making contingency plans in the event Germany tried a coup d'état to force Finland to continue fighting. On 28 March 1944 Marshal Mannerheim ordered kenraaliluutnantti Woldemar Hägglund to found Osasto Helsinki (Detachment Helsinki), aka Osasto H. Its mission was to repel all sea- and airborne attacks against the Finnish capital Helsinki.
The main infantry force of Osasto H was to be three infantry regiments: Jalkaväkirykmentti 77, 88 and 99. Jalkaväkirykmentti 77 and 88 were to be formed in the first phase, to be ready within six to seven hours after the alarm was given. Jalkaväkirykmentti 77 was to be formed of Helsinki garrison battalion Erillinen Pataljoona 30 (Detached Battalion 30), Täydennyspataljoona 2 (Supplementary Battalion 2) and Maasotakoulu (Land Warfare School, the wartime Army military academy), and would be the most efficient of the three regiments. Jalkaväkirykmentti 88's component units would be formed by Jalkaväen koulutuskeskus 1, 11 and 24 (Infantry Training Center 1, 11 and 24). The second phase, to be operational within 60 hours of the alarm, was Jalkaväkirykmentti 99 and its supporting units. In all Osasto H was to have a total strength of 16,193 men.
In the event Germany didn't have the means in 1944 to take over Finland. When the cease-fire between Finland and the Soviet Union began on 4 September 1944, Germans withdrew without incident from southern Finland, with the exception of the attempted invasion of the island of Suursaari (Gogland) in the eastern Gulf of FInland. Osasto H was deactivated on 1 October 1944.

Re: Finnish regiment commanders
Performing an act of necromancy here
Looking ahead a fair bit with my What If, I am planning to do a huge section on the Army and it's "reorganisation" and equipping through the 1930's. Part of that would be a fairly detailed breakdown of Divisions / Regiments / Battalions as of my What-If's "late 1939 just before the Winter War starts" date. Lest anyone think I am taking this thread off-track, I'll hasten to add that as my starting point, I'd really like to get an accurate breakdown of the Army organisation, units, CO's of units down to Regiment (and hopefully Battalion) level as of the start of the Winter War and as of the start of the Continuation War. This would give me a good starting point for the divergence from reality in my thread - and at the same time in this thread give a really good picture of the Army for those of us without the ability to access and read the finnish-language source material.
Before I started, wanted to put the concept up and see what you all thought. Is it OK to expand the scope of this thread somewhat and use this thread to do this?
Obviously I would take this and modify it for my What If, but I was looking to use this thread to establish a solid and accurate "historical state" starting point. Any divergence from reality would be in my What If, not here.

Re: Finnish regiment commanders
If you want to expand the focus beyond the regiments you should create a new thread and we can of course make it into a sticky.

Re: Finnish regiment commanders
I wonder if anyone can recognize everyone in the picture. They are the airforce commanders on May 1, 1944.
At the left edge :
Lt.Col Raoul Harju-Jeanty
At the table, from left:
Col. Olavi Sarko
Lt. Col. Einar Nuotio (??)
Col. Viljo Rekola
Col. Knut Ilanko (??)
Lt.Gen. Jarl Lundqvist
Col. Richard Lorenz
I am unsure about the men I recognized as Nuotio and Ilanko.

Re: Finnish regiment commanders
After some research of my own, the man in the above picture I suspected to be Einar Nuotio probably also is him. He also appears in some pictures taken in about the time of Hitler's visit.
Knut Ilanko however is not in the picture at all. There was a picture of Ilanko in the Ilmasodan Pikkujättiläinen and I'll rather trust the info. The man near the uncurtained window apparently is Gösta von Behr, the naval aviation commander.
He could be the same man who needs an identification at an Elonet project.
