List of people executed for war crimes in the Netherlands

#1

Post by Strategic_Art » 17 Aug 2009, 03:32

I have recently acquired a complete list of those sentenced to death by the special tribunals and courts and had their sentences carried out. I'm posting this because a list of those executed in the Netherlands after the war is quite hard to find. This list is taken from the Koos Groen book "Landverraad: de berechting van collaborateurs in Nederland", which is sadly out of print.

A list of those executed, with their name, age, possible other nationality, reason for execution and date (DD/MM/YY) of execution. All executions were carried out by a firing squad. The majority of executions took place on the Waalsdorpervlakte, near the sea, the same area, where, years before, resistance members were brought to be executed and buried in mass graves.
The remains of the executed Dutch war criminals have been buried in unmarked or secret collective graves.

P. J. Faber (28). SS and SD member, member of execution squad, torture of resistance members. 10-7-48 (his brother, who had his death sentence commuted to life imprisonment and escaped, is still alive, and the father of the Faber-brothers was shot by the resistance for working for the SD).

Maarten Kuiper (50). Detective in Dutch Police, member of SS and SD, took part in Silbertanne killings and personally arrested, tortured and executed (he said he directly killed 250 people) resistance members and Jews. (he was also present at the arrest of Anne Frank) 30-8-48

S. van Droffelaar (??). SD-agent in the city of Assen. Murdered seven boys with J. Lamberts. 16-11-49

K.P. Berg (42). German. Commander at Amersfoort concentration camp. Murder and mistreatment. 22-11-49

F.W. Koot (??). Member of the Henneicke-column. 24-11-49

Anton van der Waals (38). SD-agent, betrayed and blackmailed countless resistance members, key player in Englandspiel. 26-11-50

J. Herdtmann (??). Ex-consul in Kleef, leader of the organisation "Sport und Spiel", an organisation which supplied NSB members with German uniforms during the invasion in May 1940. 7-1-51

A.J. Pieters (a.k.a "Steinbach") (32). Leader of the SS-Jagdkommando Steinbach, a unit which would arrest resistance "suspects" and torture, rape and execute them in territories where the Germans were retreating. His actions were even too much for the German high command, Hans Albin Rauter had Pieters placed under SD-arrest. 20-3-52

W.A. Albrecht (45). German. Commander of the SD in the province of Friesland.

* The Landwacht were an auxilliary police force nominally under NSB control, but which answered directly to the SD. Where the "Landstorm" was the Dutch home defence army, the "Landwacht" were a paramilitary, partly plain-clothed police force. Apart from the brutal treatment meted out to the people they arrested, they were also heavily involved in looting and theft.

** The Henneicke-Column was an SD-organisation consisting of volunteer bounty hunter-detectives which would track Jews based on information they got from informants. The unit was named after member of the unit Wim Henneicke, a former taxi driver. Henneicke was assasinated by an unknown gunman after leaving his house in the last winter of the war, after he attempted to join a resistance group to "clear" his name. A book has been written on this unit in Dutch by Ad van Liempt, which has been translated into English under the name "Hitler's Bounty Hunters", an extremely good book.

you forgot

3 traitors:

Warner Salomons SD agent spionage executed 03.05.1945 in camp Vught
Teun Pâques SD agent spionage executed 03.05.1945 in camp Vught
Henk Eggers SD agent spionage executed 03.05.1945 in camp Vught

"He now hears for the first time that three of those five men were executed later, the first Dutch traitors officially, after a trial, put to death...
After studying the sentences says the Maastricht judge Mr. A. Smith: "Those three have had bad luck that they were the first. Their judges apparently thought that if we start right now to be weak is the gate of the dam soon. If these men were tried one years later, they would not than at most a year or internment have been ".
Her colleague Mr. S. Braunius, Judge of Utrecht, also claims: "Their death was completely disproportionate to what they had done. Moreover, these death sentences in no way intended to deter, or prevent operation example, resulted.
The executions are initially halted altogether. Only on June 24, 1945 is section XI of the Military Government issued a press release:
"The war in the field of military authority, the Dutch W. Salomons, T. Pâques and HM Eggers sentenced to death because helping the enemy . They joined the Waffen SS and had also been guilty of espionage. These death sentences are now carried out. "
The short message contains two important errors, which were suspected of deliberately introduced. The three were not Waffen-SS, but this addition, the punishment may be more "earned" them.
That was seven weeks previously done in silence, on May 3, 1945 in Vught. They were in prison after the war in Eindhoven in the field they were already sentenced to death on December 27 of the last year."
...
"Here he met old friends, including Henk Eggers, once valued non-commissioned officer in the Dutch army, but now also Nazis.
But why Pâques and Eggers in October 1944 - when everyone was already clear that German war production losses - still crossed the front line into the liberated south,to blow up British tanks, was also not clear ."

Hi Strategic_Art

Thanks for interesting info. Do you have any more info on the SS-Jagdkommando "Steinbach" (A.J. Pieters)? I am not sure if this SS/SD Jagdkommando is under Otto Skorzeny as the leader of all SS/SD Jagdverbande teams

Also, do you know if any members of the Landwacht 'Jan Hegel' paramilitary unit were executed in Netherlands?

Do you have in the list or book any reference who are the others in that comission who arrested the people in Prinsengracht? Kuiper an Silberbauer but I think they were 4 or 5 policemen

Hello,

I wonder whether you know anything more about the execution of the mayors of Asten and Someren in the Netherlands, late 1944? This was apparently done by a person called G. Rollema, who was executed for this crime on 6 February 1947.

Who was G. Rollema, and what were the circumstances of the murder of the two mayors in 1944?

Thank you

Johanna

Hello David,

Many thanks for this. Rollema was executed in 1947 but the other four Sonderkommando members had their death sentences converted to"life" imprisonment.
