danyb -- He might be this fellow:

Hoffman, August (?-30.11.1945) [Navy Lieutenant] -- officer, U-852 {put on trial at Hamburg by a British military tribunal on charges that the crew of U-852 had sunk SS Peleus in the south Atlantic during Mar 1944 and then machine-gunned the survivors (NYT 18 Oct 1945:5:1; LT 18 Oct 1945:3d; LT 19 Oct 1945:3d; LT 20 Oct 1945:3:e); convicted and sentenced to death 20 Oct 1945 (NYT 21 Oct 1945:8:1; LT 22 Oct 1945:3:c); executed 30 Nov 1945 (NYT 1 Dec 1945:7:2).}

Frank was tried about the killing of four Canadian prisoners of war at Tilly la Campagne (Normandy), presumably 1944 but I don't have that date immediately available.
