the idea of hate crimes and Hate crime laws are just a new politically correct method/type of "race-baiting". Juluis Streicher/Randolph Hearst/et al., must be smiling somewhere.

did they get 10 years though and is their a source showing this...PFLB wrote:Indeed but 10 years 'community service' at a fixed location in the middle of nowhere? That is basically the equivalent of serving 10 years in a minimum security prison. I could go out and stab someone for being black and I would still get a lower sentence than that, and they love to gaol people where I live.

The court convicted the three and handed them prison terms ranging between 18 months and 2 year and six months without trial, because they had agreed to that settlement. AP Photo.

Re: 'Arbeit Macht Frei' inscription was stolen from Auschwit
but alas even the sentence with was for 18 monthis to 21/2 years resulted in a no-show of the 3 convicts, when apt to show up and serve their sentence...
http://www.foxnews.com/world/2010/04/21 ... sh-prison/WARSAW, Poland
WARSAW, Poland (AP) — The three men found guilty last month of secondary roles in the theft of the notorious Auschwitz sign failed to show up to prison this week when they were supposed to start their sentences, a judge said Wednesday.
The three, two of whom are brothers, were to have appeared at a prison in the Polish city of Wloclawek on Tuesday but didn't. Now police will try to track them down and detain them, said Rafal Lisak, a judge at a Krakow court that convicted the men in March.
Lisak indicated that judicial authorities were not expecting the no-shows.
"There were no fears that they would hide or obstruct matters in any other way," Lisak told The Associated Press.
Five Poles and a Swede have been charged with involvement in stealing the sign with the cynical slogan "Arbeit Macht Frei" — or "Work Sets You Free — from the site of the former death camp in December.
The three who were to have started prison terms this week made plea bargains with the court, confessing to their involvement in return for more lenient sentences. They were given sentences ranging from 18 months to 2 1/2 years.
Lisak says it is normal procedure for those with sentences shorter than three years to be released from custody before their prison terms.

If there's a thread on the phrase itself, I didn't find it... So, regarding this piece of info:
This info isn't sourced, and I haven't found any source that mentions it that refers to another (named) source than Wikipedia.Wikipedia wrote:It was adopted in 1928 by the Weimar government as a slogan extolling the effects of their desired policy of large-scale public works programmes to end unemployment

'did they get 10 years though and is their a source showing this...'
I wasn't commenting on the sentence they received but on what someone said they should receive, without taking into account the fact that they were basically referring for a 10 year gaol term, not community service.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-13444744Museum officials at the former Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland have restored the metal entrance sign damaged in a theft 17 months ago.
The "Arbeit macht frei" (work sets you free) sign was stolen by a gang of Polish thieves acting at the behest of a Swedish far-right-winger.
Technicians unveiled the restored sign in the laboratory of the camp museum.

Re: 'Arbeit Macht Frei' inscription was stolen from Auschwit
So, the sign I saw when I visited Auschwitz in June last year was only a copy? It looked genuine enough.
It seems odd that a copy of the sign was on hand to replace the genuine one as soon as the latter was stolen. It makes one wonder how many copies there are, and also whether the one stolen was also a copy.
If the Auschwitz Museum had already gone to the trouble of making a copy or copies, before the theft took place, then the obvious thing to do would be to display one of the copies while keeping the original safely under wraps somewhere.
Who would know the difference? As I wrote, when I saw the sign it looked quite genuine.
Maybe some enterprising Pole sold the original sign years ago, and it has been a copy that has been on display ever since then.

I'm afraid that it is not as sensational as your imagination would like it to be.
A newspaper article from 2006 explains that a copy of the sign, made by museum employees for the purpose to substitute the original while it undergoes conservation treatment, will be displayed for a few months.

BTW, last year, two teachers from Canada and last week a Frenchman were caught stealing from the museum.

In the other case a guy was caught at the airport with a piece of barbwire. He explained that he took it from the Auschwitz Museum. It turned out it was not exactly part of the museum, so he was let go.

Thank you both. It´s horrible that people are taking "souvenirs" from this place
