Auschwitz Zone of Interest

Postby Alborg on 05 Feb 2012 03:38

Hey everyone... 1st post here. I have an interest in the Auschwitz protective Zone of Interest (Interessengebiet). Does anyone know of any books that deal with the subject? I'm interested in where the exact area was & any details of the Expulsion of the local population. It seems like there isn't too much information known about the area & the industries it contained?

Marek Rawecki has published a book length study about the interest zone (http://www.sklep.architekci.pl/strefa-a ... kenau.html), but unfortunately it is, as far as I know, available only in Polish. Even if one does not read Polish, this expert report by Rawecki could be useful as it has many detailed maps about the buildings and explains their uses during the war, and it gives also the German names for the some of the sites:

Thanks siwiec.

That book is exactly what I would be after but yes unfortunately it looks to only have been published in Polish & is out of print? I visited the area & Museum/memorial a few months back & they didn't have that one in stock. Maybe it would be a good idea if the Museum republishes it themselves in English? I'm sure that there would be some interest in the subject if it was more widely available.

Maybe you find this book interesting: http://www.post-editions.com/?page=auschwitz-oswiecim

It's a photographical research of the surroundings of the camp.

A English version is available. ISBN = 9789460830501

Thanks Kevin. I just ordered that book. Now, I just need to track down an English version of Strefa Auschwitz-Birkenau... It seems that there was a Polish/English available at one point. Thanks to everyone for your input & help.

This book is still available and is unique in the fact it is in Polish and English. The reverse side is Polish.
The Museum should have them in stock, but may not have had them on display when you visited.

In addition, Hans Citroen published a book at the end of 2011 Auschwitz - Oswiecim that does tend to cross over with Marek's book in places. Indeed, Marek assisted Hans in the research of the book.

Marek's book tackles the zone of interest in great detail including the change of boundaries over the years along with the impact on the residents of the town. So I am sure you will find this of huge interest.

Thirdly, if you can get 'Preserving for the future', a book only available from the museum from 2003, this has some interesting material on the subject.

Thanks for the info. I ordered the Hans Citroen book last week... I also contacted the publishing department at the museum who stated that they do have copies of the strefa-auschwitz-birkenau book but unfortunately can't ship them out of the country (?)... I have contacted someone in a small book store in Krakow who was kind enough to find a copy for me & will be sending it soon. I was not aware that all copies are in Polish & English? That is a relief as Polish text is a nightmare to try to decipher :) . Many thanks to everyone who has helped me out on this thread!

Marek Rawecki has also posted his photo's on Panoramio. (Google Earth Photo Database)

The images “Auschwitz-Birkenau Zone” are quiet rare. There are milions of pictures of the "Museum" but not from just outside this perimeter.

His images regarding the subject of this thread are here :

I guess that they own just an exemmple at their library. Hence they don´t publish this book they don´t sell it. From my personaly experience I can assurey that the staff there is very helpfull if they can. Also please note that the bookshop at the Auschwitz Memorial & Museum is not owned by them but from a partner in Krakow:

Where please? Most likely 2nd hand books from allegro.pl (something like the polish e-bay).
All polish results of my search in online bookshops brought up this result: Nakład wyczerpany = not avalaible.

Yes! Jarden is the store that has found a copy of the book for me. Mail from Poland to Australia is a little slow though.

Many thanks for the links. Fascinating to see what is left of the area & other details apart from the common images we know of & see in documentaries.
