The Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) is looking for the bodies of victims of communist crimes at the Bródno cemetery in Warsaw.

The dig is being overseen by prof. Krzysztof Szwagrzyk at the 45N quarters within the cemetery. The goal of the dig is to locate the burial sites of the victims of communism who were lost, murdered or died in prisons and detention centres in Warsaw in the mid 1940s.

"In the 45N quarters, victims of communism from 1946 were buried. [They were] murdered in prisons in the [Warsaw] Praga district. Among the most famous characters, whose remains we hope to find, are those of Major Marian Bernaciak known as Orlik [Little Eagle], a soldier of the Polish Army and the Home Army, and the post-war underground movement,” prof. Szwagrzyk said. As the expert pointed out, the area includes the remains of about 33 people who were convicted of anti-communist activities. (rg)
