Chelmno Mansion Photograph

For decades a number of people have been searching for a photograph of the mansion in Chelmno where the camp victims were forced to undress and enter a gas van before being driven to a nearby forest and buried - later burned. A photograph has recently been found and published in a new book (Polish language only) Świadectwa Zagłady. Obóz w Chełmnie nad Nerem. Getto wiejskie w Czachulec by Łucja Pawlicka-Nowak and Jolanta Adamska. The image dates from around 1890.

In 1941-43 the front of the building was enclosed with a wooden fence. Once a transport was inside this area the so-called arrival speech was given from the steps of the entrance on the left side of the photo or from above on the balcony. Afterwards, the victims entered the building from this same entrance.
