Gleiwitz Subcamps (Auschwitz) Locations

#1

Post by Geoff Walden » 14 Apr 2016, 17:43

Can someone post the exact locations of the remains of the Gleiwitz II and III camps? I am looking for the exact locations of the remains seen here (also the monuments to the camp victims).
Thanks!
Geoff

Hi Geoff,

do you think the coordinates given on the website are not correct?
50.2905° N 18.6876° E
I must admit that I don´t doubt them.

Hi Roman,

Thanks, I have searched all around there on Google Maps, and I see nothing like these remains there, from the air. Maybe they are around there somewhere, but I do not see them. His map/coords seem to show nothing but an area between two post-war factory buildings. I can't pick out any watchtowers or old barracks buildings there.

Thanks, wm! That's exactly what I was looking for! I was wondering if Nr. 1 might be one, but I had not noticed 2 or 3.

Do you have locations for the Gleiwitz II remains?

The monument (50°16'25.3"N 18°42'05.2"E) :

The carbon black factory and the camp barracks were in front of it, on the other side of the street.
The factory has been demolished a few years ago, so let's say survival of anything is unlikely. And actually there are doubts what was what and where there, the available information is quite sketchy.
A single-person air raid shelter was probably moved to Silesian Museum in Katowice. The others similar shelters (called bunkers on sztetl) probably are still there somewhere.

Thanks very much to your help, wm, and also the generous help of Cameron Munro of tiergartenstrasse4.org, I was able to locate these sites yesterday. They are not really close to the coordinates given on the sztetl.org.pl pages - that is, the actual locations are some distance away, and if one only searched at those exact coordinates, one might not find the sites easily.
Unfortunately, the Gleiwitz II site has been essentially destroyed. The brick pylons are there, but one has been pushed over by a bulldozer and is now lying on the ground. The other relics around there have been buried or broken up or removed, and that area has been cleared of trees and bushes and bulldozed over. We saw nothing of the barracks building in the photo at the top. Parts of the fencing do remain, as well as a couple of smaller concrete bunkers and one Einmannbunker (back beside an abandoned factory building inside the site). We never could find the monument, either at the location given on the sztetl.org.pl page, or near the site itself.
At the Gleiwitz III site, which is a working foundry not open to the public, we were very fortunate to meet the president of the foundry company, who very kindly gave us a personal tour. He took us to the former HQs building with monument marker, all five brick watch towers, and the original building seen above.
We didn't have time to look for the other Gleiwitz sites or monuments.

Did you asume that the coordinates are for every single photo they show on their website instead the general location of the former subcamp?
True, great guys at the Tiergartenstraße4!
RIP, Artur, never I´ll forget your broad-minded help.

Thanks, Roman, I have been exploring sites and locations for many years, both with and without coordinates. The artifacts that we saw at the Gleiwitz sites are not at the stated coordinates ... certainly not the memorials, which is what that website says. I'm just trying to help out anyone else who may search for these artifacts that can still be seen today, and point out that they are at a different location from those coordinates. This may make someone else's search easier.
If anyone else is interested, here the location coordinates:
Gleiwitz II brick pylons - 50.274557, 18.697752
Gleiwitz II guard bunker - 50.274415, 18.698699
Gleiwitz II Einmannbunker and crude air raid bunker - 50.273128, 18.696372
We did not find any barracks remains or the memorial, either in that area or in the park area shown on the sztetl.org page.
Gleiwitz III former HQs building and memorial - 50.291206, 18.685335
Gleiwitz III periphery guard towers - 50.290516, 18.683520 ; 50.289876, 18.683831 ; 50.289478, 18.684411 ; 50.289045, 18.685532; 50.288801, 18.687080
Gleiwitz III original workshop building - 50.289218, 18.685916
(As stated in my post above, the Gleiwitz III site is inside a foundry industrial complex, not open to the public.)
