Andy - the author makes no mention of similar incidents in the area. The ambulance was returning from the 'front lines' to an aid station in the rear.

I assume that the red crosses were visible and the ambulance carried no weapons. The lack of any survivors makes me wonder, too.

For a comprehensive discussion of war crimes during the 1939 campaign in Poland see Rossino AB. Hitler strikes Poland. Blitzkrieg, ideology and atrocity. Kansas: University Press of Kansas; 2003. Chapters 5 and 6 in particular deal with German Army involvement in atrocities.
