Amber room

We've discussed this before, but to give an idea of what is still missing, check out this article, a paragraph of which I post.

Code: Select all

Amber, the translucent fossil resin left by long-extinct trees, is most often seen in small objects -- beads, amulets, rings. But rebuilding the famous czarist wonder took more than six tons of high-quality amber taken from the Baltic Sea. The room is 1,080 square feet, the size of a large living room. The amber panels cover three of the 26-foot-high walls; windows cover most of the fourth wall. A team of Russian master craftsmen has worked full time since the early 1980s to refashion the room with little more than a series of prewar black-and-white photographs to guide them.

This was taken in 1941, and one wonders where all this could possibly be hidden. The stuff is very light, and 6 tons is a large volume.

Consensus is that it was destroyed either by being sunk or hit in a bombing raid while being transported overland. I read that a former German soldier was found to possess a large chunk of carved amber. He had picked it up from a truck that was struck by a Soviet bomb during the retreat from Leningrad. It would seem to confirm the destruction of the orginal Amber Room.

Ironically, the Amber Room was a gift from the King of Prussia to Elizabeth the Great.

Hi WL!

Several weeks ago there was the head of "project team" in German TV. Due to the work of this project team several theories could be excluded. In their opinion there are only 2 alternatives left:

1. The Amber Room is still in the underground system of the Königsberg castle.
2. The Amber Room is in Thuringia (Thüringen), in a totally slopped mine/tunnel system.

The alternative that the amber room was aboard a ship is now totally out of discussion.

Unfortunately my mind doesn´t serve me and I can´t recall the name of the project leader.

presume the discussion is coming as the russians have just paraded the remade amber room in relation to the anniversery of st. petersburg. this is truly one of the most fascinating mysteries from the war.

Actionally, it was a present of Friedrich Wilhelm I. to Peter I.

The East German secret service (Stasi) was convinced that the Amber Room was somwhere (presumably Thuringia) on the territory of the GDR.

Famous Amber Room Closes to Visitors September 3 till May Next Year

Starting tomorrow, the famous Amber Room of the Tsarskoye Selo State Museum-Preserve will be closed to visitors until May 2003. The restoration work that has continued for over 20 years and now is 95% done is supposed to be completed by that time.

The completion of the restoration of the Amber Room is one of the points of the preparation for St. Petersburg's tercentenary. Supposedly, all the monarchs will arrive to take part in the celebration. The Amber Room is expected to be opened by that time.

The problem is, St. Petersburg has just about no monumental style artist skilled in stonework left. Ivan Sautov, Director of the Tsarskoye Selo museum, says, 'Nearly all work in the Amber Room has been done by three master artists, the youngest already 70. Regretfully, stonework skills are lost with time, so we are losing the unique artistic school.'

The restoration of the Amber Room, which had been stolen by the German army, began in 1979. About 6 tonnes of amber has been used so far. The amber came from Kaliningrad. For 20 years, from 1979 through 1999, the work was financed by the federal government, a total of USD 7.754 million spent. An agreement was signed in 1999 to the effect that from then on the work would be financed by the German Ruhrgas company that pledged a donation of USD 3.5 million. Most of that has also been spent. The remaining USD 430,000 will be used up between now and May 2003

Joel:

the konigsberg Teutonic knight's castle no longer exists, on its site was built (on top) the local communist party headquarters, a very tall building.

the rusians did not explore the underground well before deciding to build the local communist party HQ there, as a result, the building has been sinking for the last 20 years (I think).

The galleries under the building are accesible (some) but most have collapsed under the sheer weight of the building on top. hence very dangerous, if not impossible to investigate there.

glad to help:

another theory suggest the russians salvaged the amber rooom from the Wilhelm Gustloff in the late 1960's and used the reamins to reconstruct the piece now on exhibition:

look here: http://www.deepimage.co.uk/wrecks/wilhe ... erroom.htm

konigsberg castle, circa 1944:

Image

from: http://www.castlesofpoland.com/prusy/krol_hist_en.htm the following:
The ruins of the castle, destroyed mostly during British bombing, are ulitimatelly blasted in 1967-1969. In the place a Home of Soviets is built, typical communistic building, future home of communistic party. But the work could not be completed - design engineers did not take into consideration castle's undergrounds and the new building subsides and tilts, is not safe - in this state it remains today.
