Correct spelling

#2

Post by Octavianus » 02 Oct 2002, 16:07

Ave David,

The correction of some spelling mistakes and some additional data:
Berkovic, Jose - Most likely his real full name would be Josip Berkovic. Jose is equal Spanish first name for Croatian "Josip".
Bilogranitch or Bilogrivitch, Dr. Nikola - Dr Nikola Bilogranic or Bilogrivic. Can't confirm the true surname of his.
Bogdan, Ivo - Croatian "Goebbels" - Minister for Propaganda
Borich, Francis - Probably Franjo Boric
Cerkovnik, Franz - Franc Cerkovnik. German "Franz" is equivalent to Slovene "Franc". This was aSlovene catholic priest.
Crnkovitch, Josip - Josip CRNKOVIC. Ch is C with haschek, while TCH is C with half haschek, something we may find only in Serbo-Croatian language.
Dangich, Jezdimar - Jezdimar Dangic
Dapcevic - There was a Yugoslav General Peka Dapcevic, commander of 3rd Yugoslav Army, but he died in 1970s, I think. This must be another Dapcevic. Anyway, what I wanted to add here is, that most likely he was shot by Yugoslav border guards while trying to cross the border with Hungary in 1948 when that Informbiro crisis erupted between Tito's Yugoslavia and the rest of the communist world. Some high ranking Yugoslav officers and party officials were allegedly (at least so does claim the Yugoslav offical history) shot while trying to cross the border. Most famous border victim was General Arsa Jovanovic, former Chief-of-Staff of Yugoslav Army during the war time and Tito's close war buddy. One of rare Royal Yugoslav army officers that joined his group of guerillas. he was shot in 1948, while trying to cross the Yugoslav-Romanian border, although other speculations about his death are also available.
Delich, Nicolas - Probably NIKOLA DELIC
Devcich, Don - Don ? DEVCIC. Don is a title for a Franciscan monk, if I am not mistaken, same as father, friar etc... When in 1930s a small group of Ustasha tried to launch a nationa uprising by attacking in gendarmerie station in Lika, one of those infiltrators was shot, and I think his surname was also Devcic.
Ganljak, Adolf- Never heard of this Croatian general though.
Gulin, Pavle - It could be also CULIN. (Tchulin). Not sure. Keep your Gulin here just in case.
Jevdjevitch, Dobroslav - DOBROSAV JEVDJEVIC
Jovanovic, Dragolub - DRAGOLJUB JOVANOVIC
Kalabic, Nikola - According to Yugoslav sources, Kalabic was also responsible for handing over General Mihailovic to them by betraying him.
Pro-Mihailovic sources fiercely oppose to this theory.
Karanovitch, Branko - BRANKO KARANOVIC
Kolednjak, Mikro - Probably his first name was MIRKO and not Mikro.
Krajnc, Boris - BORIS KRANJC
Krek, Dr. Miho - Dr. MIHA KREK
Kuvardjitch, Ivan - Kuvardjic???
Lorkovitch, Blazo - BLAZ LORKOVIC
Marinitch, Modeste - MODEST MARINIC
Maritch, Djuro - DJURO MARIC
Nedjelski, Felix - FELIX NEDZIELSKI
Raditch, Risto - RISTO RADIC
Radovitch, Novitca - NOVICA RADOVIC
Rozman, Gregor - GREGORIJ ROZMAN
Shalitch, Ivan - IVAN SALIC. You have put his name twice.
Slomic-Buzdon, Maja - I actualy have somewhere in my archive a photo of her and her husband Satnik Mirko Stomic while in Yugoslav captivity. They both served in Nova Gradiska KZL.
(Tomic), Victor - VIKTOR TOMIC
Tribukayt, Guenther - GÜNTHER TRIBUKAIT
Vidovitch, Josip - JOSIP VIDOVIC
Vignjevitch, Ivan - IVAN VIGNJEVIC or VISNJEVIC
Vizjak, Vilko - Colonel MILKO VIZJAK. There was no Slovene puppet army, as there was no Slovene national army in WWII, only "Slowenisches Landwehr", which were considered by Germans not as military alieds in the correct term of the word, but rather as a part of the SS Polizei and Ordnungspolizei Command.
Yovovich, Yakob N - JAKOB N. JOVOVIC
Klemen, Kriso - Kriso? Are you sure it does not write KRIZAR?
Gvozditch, Petain - PETAIN?!? Is it maybe PETER GVOZDIC? There was one Ustasha Colonel Gvozdic in Poglavnik's Bodyguard Division who was executed by Ustasha shortly before they retreated from Zagreb. As it has proved, this Colonel Gvozdic was in reality a German SS Officer Herbert Schneiber, who was planted into Bodyguard unit to train it and to provide intelligence information for Gestapo and SD.
Gratiam,

Octavianus

[quote="David Thompson"]
Devcich, Don (?-1944) -- Franciscan monk, Podgora {reported shot as a Croat collaborator by Yugoslav partisans c. Dec 1944 (NYT 30 Dec 1944:6:8).}

There was listed a Devcic, Marko (1887-1944) priest who was killed. The correct spelling is Devcic pronounced as "Devchich"

Jezdimir Dangić was shoot immediatelly after he was sentenced.
Đura Đurović was not killed. He served 20 years imprisonment and than released.
I never heard about Novica Radović.Leader of the montenegrin federalists in ww2 was Krsto Popović.

This was not Peka Dapcevic. It was Vlado. A relative of mine. He was not shot, he lived a very long life. He remained involved in Montenegrin politics til the end.

Hmmm, might know a bit about some of them but have no time to check it all properly...
Ok, let's see if we can 'nail' at least one per a day:

''Berkovic, Jose''

Dr. Berkovic Josip, actually.
b. 18.03.1885. at Hvar Island ( present Croatia, Habsburg Monarchy those days ), d. 05.07.1968. Rosario, Argentina

A member of HSS ( Croatia Agrarian Party ) before the war, shortly a mayor of Split ( 1928- 1929 ).
During the war a vice president of ISC Parliament at the beginning, then ISC ambassador in Bratislava.
Might be described as a member of an extreme wing of HSS but again a member of a soft wing in ISC goverment.
( ''Zivot i djelo Josipa Berkovica'', Stjepan Blazanovic, 1993 )

Appears to have escaped to Agentina via Vatican charity org. ''Caritas'', approx. April 1947.
( ''Soldiers, Spies and the Rat Line'', James Milano, Washington, 1996; informations correspond to the secret Argentinian archive filles opened in 2003 I believe )

Lived in the famous 'Gran Hotel Viena'' for a while, practised medicine.
Don't have any precise info on his death rather than a date, also never met any precise indictment against him just a general term '...war criminal responsible for death of innocent people...'

I'll see what I can do further ( or undo, hehe ),

Respect,

Ivan

* I'd also say that the fact that Yugoslav security agencies ( OZNA, UDBA, KOS, etc. ) had no recorded attempts to eliminate him although he was an active member of Croatian nationalists community in Argentina speaks in term that he wasn't rated as a 'prime class' war criminal by them.
