Lemberg/Lvov Fotos - Warning: Some are a bit graphic

#1

Post by stcamp » 03 Jan 2006, 20:33

These are fotos from ebay and my collection. I started doing research on Lemberg and became sidetracked.

Lvov was a city in Eastern Galicia, now part of the Ukraine. At the outbreak of the war, it had a Jewish population of about 110,000, making it the third largest Jewish community in Poland. After the outbreak of the war, the Soviets occupied the city, and some 100,000 Jewish refugees from German-occupied western Poland flooded into the city. Over 70,000 of these refugees were expelled to the Russian interior. On June 30, 1941, the Germans occupied the city, and a series of pograms began at the hands of the Germans and Ukranians. A Judenrat was established shortly thereafter, and a ghetto was created by December, 1941. At the time of the German occupation, there were about 160,000 Jews in the town. By the time of the final liquidation of the ghetto in June, 1943, there were only 20,000 Jews remaining. The rest had been either killed in the pogroms, sent to other labor camps or sent to the death camp at Belzec.

My purpose for posting these is threefold.

1. Education - Yes, there really was a holocaust
2. Remembrance - For those who were there and those who are researching it now.
3. Information and fotos not shared is truly information lost.

A few of these were post previously and sunk with out a trace.

Regards,
Steve

I decided it was unneccesary to post some of the more graphic ones. These make more of a point if you look at the faces of the living.

For the information of readers who may be misled, the photographs showing bodies lying on the ground and women identifying them were taken by German soldiers very soon after entering Lviv in July 1941.

The bodies are those of prisoners, mostly of Ukrainian ethnicity, held in NKVD jails as a result of a Soviet crackdown on Ukrainian nationalist resistance to the Soviet occupation. On the approach of the advancing German forces, the NKVD troops were ordered to evacuate the prisoners, but there was not enough time, so they massacred them, before fleeing. In some cases the bodies were hastily buried, in other cases simply left lying packed in the prison cellars... Many thousands were massacred in that way.

The women identifying the bodies are almost certainly Ukrainian, some perhaps Polish.

The photos were taken by German troops for propaganda purposes as examples of Soviet barbarity.

The population of Lviv and of East Galicia as a whole blamed the Jewish minority for the atrocities, since the Jews had in aggregate been the main supporters of, collaborators with, and beneficiaries of the Soviet occupation. As a result, local Ukrainian nationalists launched a retaliatory pogrom against the Jews of Lviv in which many hundreds were killed.

The Jews killed almost certainly bore no personal responsibility for the massacres in the NKVD jails, since the actual perpetrators had fled. Nevertheless, they the innocent were suffering the consequences of actions perpetrated by those of their ethnic brethren who were indeed guilty.
