Volksmarine ships?

Postby Peter H on 07 Nov 2010 10:17

Is it true that Indonesia brought the bulk of the former Volksmarine's ships?

Yes Indonesia bought several former Volksmarine ships. There were also other countries that purchased ships, some were scrapped and a some like tugs and cranes were retained by the Bundesmarine and other Germany agencies.

hi

the "Torpedoschnellboote 206" (NATO: SHERSHEN) are missing in this list.

Yes, there were 18 Project 206 Torpedoschnellboote. Because of the fatigue caused by the high speeds of these fast torpedo boats 12 of the 18 were retired or scrapped by the Volksmarine between 1984 and 1986. I believe the remaining 6 were scrapped after unification in 1990. There may be a couple in museum in Germany.

Here is one of the former East German Parchim class ships sold to Indonesia and renamed KRI MEMET SASTRAWARIA (KRI being the Indonesian equivalent of HMS or USS). I took the photo in mid-2007 while the ship I was on passed by in the area north of the Malacca Strait.

You're welcome. This photo is of KRI Teluk Hading which is the ex-DDR ship 'Cottbus' (Frosch I Class). Unfortunately the haze in Jakarta harbour doesnt help with taking clear pictures. Taken a month after the one above.

Excuse my leap-back-in-time, but I have a question about the VM's old Riga-class. I've read where five units were originally purchased; however one was burnt out shortly after it was acquired. The four that entered service were Ernst Thalmann, Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels and Karl Liebknecht. Was the fifth ship named? I remember something about it being named Rosa Luxembourg, but that was something I vaguely recall from my college days (circa 1970s), so I could very well be dead wrong. Any info?
