Picked up a "Kriegs Chronik" of a Kriegsmarine sailor - Alwin Satzger, signaller (EK2, Mine sweeper, U-boot awards) briefly, at first on a heavy cruiser (think either Lützow or Admiral Hipper) convoy protection duty, took part in Battle of Barents Sea. Later, with a Netzsperrverband at the start of 1945 his boat was sunk by the English near the Shetlands and he was picked up by a English destroyer - returning home 9.9.45.
I've looked through historical German Achieves, find no trace of Satzger , which makes it difficult to find out further information. What I want to know is who sunk him near the Shetlands, his boat's name and if possible which heavy cruiser was he on during the battle of the Barents Sea. Regards

U-boat can be only ship sunk near Shetland's. No other german ships sail so far to west in 1945.

Re: German Ship sunk near Shetlands early 1945 ?
Thanks for the post Igorr. I did read in the Kriegsmarine archives, which confirms two U-boats were lost in early 1945 near the Shetlands, one went down with all hands lost, the other one had two survivors pulled from the sea by the British, but both died shorty afterwards from decompression sickness (bends). I think my best chance of further information is perhaps to research the Netzsperrverband he was with, however there's not much to go on.I take it they were the unit, responsible for laying protection nets across harbours, river estuaries. Hard to think what they were doing, just off the Shetlands - maybe mine laying!
