hi, Carius,

afaik, S 101 never went to the Black Sea. The boat shown might be S 102 or another S 38 type boat.

greetings, the pb

Base of the 1. Schnellbootflotille in Iwan Baba - Cabo Kik-Atlama.

Hello to all :D; a little more..............

The 3rd Raumboot Flotille in the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea.

Background.

Created in the spring/summer of 1939 with Pillau in East Prussia as a port of origin. This soon led to the election of a moose head as the emblem on both sides of the bow. Without being totally organized, the flotilla was engaged in the Bay of Danzig at the beginning of the WWII. During the winter of 1939/40 executed security tasks in the German Bay in Cuxhaven, then during Operation Weserübung occupied in early April 1940 without fighting the Danish port of Thyborön in north Jutland. Later escorted troops to Larvik via the Skagerrat. After the French Campaign was deployed in Holland. Beginning February 1942, the flotilla carried out night work in front of Calais to establish sea strips free of mines.

Deployment to the Black Sea 1942

At the end of March 1942, after a short period of operations on the Canal, the order for the transfer to Cuxhaven, the first stage of the redeployment to the Black Sea, arrived from the Naval Operations Command in Berlin. To do this, the boats were conditioned for transport by land (Autobahn-gerecht) for it were partially dismantled and lightened in Cuxhaven (dismantled superstructures and diesel engines). The boats of the flotilla were of wood with a length of 36 meters, a 6 meters beam and 1.42 meters high; were powered by two 900-horsepower diesel engines. In Hamburg they were towed by the Elbe and in Dresden Übigau the boats were loaded in a species of buckets where they would be transported. Each bucket, measured about 40 meters long and rested on trailers, the whole was transported by tractors in front and rear. The column was accompanied by the police who closed the section of motorway to Ingolstadt. In Ingolstadt, where they arrived after five days of travel, the boats were put back into the water. They were then towed downstream by the Danube, with a 70 cm high jump to get around the "Stone Bridge" in Regensburg and then to Linz, where the boats were reassembled and after eight days they were again ready to sail. Later, passing through Vienna and Belgrade, they reached their base at Ochakov east of Odessa, on the estuary of the mouth of the Bug. The first boats to get there were R-166 and R-35.

The following night, a convoy of wooden boats from the Kerch Strait was escorted into the Sea of Azov. Hello to all :D; a little more..............

The 3rd Raumboot Flotille in the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea.

Activities in 1943.

At the end of February 1943 the flotilla operated again in the western part of the Black Sea. On February 8, 1943, the R 165 and the R 163 swept 15 mines in the area north of Sebastopol. The next day another seven M-12 type mines were swept away. As for the escort service, the flotilla along with a submarine and three minelayers escorted six freighters with a total of 19,900 tons in January 1943. In February 1943, 15 merchant ships were escorted with a total of 40,771 tons. Two air strikes were rejected. Throughout the summer of 1943, the flotilla escorted convoys of supply and cleared the logistic routes of mines.

From September 12 until early October 1943, Operation "Brunhild" (Unternehmen "Brunhild") took place. The 17th German Army withdrew from the Kuban bridgehead by successive defensive positions and at the same time prevented a breakthrough by the Soviet North Caucasus Front which had begun to attack. By using the 1st, 3rd, 5th MFP Flotillas and the 7th flotilla of landing craft, Siebel ferries, engineers' ferries, tugboats, barges and riverboats under the command of the Black Sea Admiral and the Caucasus Naval Commander, Kapitän z. S. Grattenauer, 239,669 men, 16,311 wounded, 27,456 civilians, 115,477 tons of material, 21,230 motor vehicles, 27,741 horse-drawn vehicles, 1,815 guns, 74 tanks, 74,657 horses and 6,255 cattle were transported through the Kerch Strait.

The 3rd Raumboot Flotille in the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea.

Activities in 1943.

Overtaking landings, which were carried out by Soviet light units on the south and north coasts, could no longer interfere with German movements. The vessels of the 1st S-Flotilla, the 3rd R-flotilla and the artillery support were responsible for securing the Kerch Strait against Soviet ship-breaking. This led several times to carry out skirmishes with the Soviet light naval forces, on September 17, 20 and 24. From October 8 to 10, Operation Viking (Unternehmen Wiking) took place: the relocation of 240 vehicles used for the evacuation of the Kuban bridgehead in four large convoys from the Kerch Strait to Sevastopol. Security was provided by the 3rd and 30th R-flotillas and 23rd UJ flotilla reinforced towards the sea by the 1st S-Flotilla. By an air attack the Pionier-Sturmboot 229 sank and by submarine attack the Marinefährprahm F 474.

From 1 November to 12 December 1943, Eltigen's bridgehead was blocked by R-boote, MFP and S-boote, under the Commander of the 3rd R-flotilla, Kptlt Klassmann.

"By an air attack the Pionier-Sturmboot 229 sank"
--> This was the "Pionierlandungsfähre 229" of the Pi.Ldgs.Btl. 86 - a catamaran vessel.
The "224" was damaged in this attack and "227" had one killed and one injured from aircraft MG.
