The hospital ship Moero
Re: The hospital ship Moero
Well, there was 10 U-boote in area on 20.9.44. From them, 4 guarded Seeigel-sperre, 2 was on patrol in Aaland see, 2 stayed in Baltischport, one in Kopli and one (Hohmann) in Reval. Alas, there is no report about U-bootlage on 21.9.44, only mention on 20.9.44, that next day (i.e. 21th) Hohmann must leave and go to Aaland see. So, U 1165 may be only U-boot at Reval on 21.9.44. In reality she was send to south as escort for Luftwaffen-tanker HANNA, but i don't know exactly when. 23.9 Hohmann send message about his convoy from sea.

A boat, not boats.asubris wrote:Thanks for that confirmation about U boats.

Some sort of a Hilfsminensucher might then be an option.asubris wrote: I am beginning to believe that what we believed to be minesweeper was an auxiliary ship
At the other thread about the same issue I posted this link:
http://www.hot.ee/hintzer/laeva_0.htm
Don't know how thruthful it is, but there is a mention of a (auxillary???) miinitraaler (minesweeper) RO-2, that If I understand correctly, left Tallinn the same day as Moero.

In KTB no subs numbers, only their commanders names. This was:
Nielsen, von Rothkirch, Groth, von Trotha; Herglotz and Sons; Hohmann; Blaudow and Pancke; Schunck.
If you wish, you may check it thru u-boat.net.

Re: The hospital ship Moero
When I refer back to my brother some things are becoming clearer. There definitely two submarines, as my next oldest brother at that time was three and nearly fell off the gangplank between the two.
This ship that he called minesweeper (I have my doubts), but it had a large hold behind the bridge; the had the captains quarters under the bridge; the other sailors were in front of the bridge area; there were no obvious guns on board; they did some mine clearing but only with long poles; my mother remarked how shocked she was when she saw the explosives; brother did not see explosives probably under cover; the ship was on a special mission; they talked about blowing up installations in Estonia but did not; they called in at other ports on the way back to Pillau one can guess doing the same either destroying eg bridges or something or clearing up secret documents. Very interesting. Thanks for your help. I am going to show my brother some of the ships from Kriegsmarine site when he comes again in next two weeks. Regards to all for all your comments which helps to get nearer to the facts and truth, Arvo

Re: The hospital ship Moero
Researching subs from KTB is very long and hard process. Sorry, i have no time for this! I think you can discover this from uboat.net, if you know where to search (by commanders names).

Re: The hospital ship Moero
A memory from the past:
Have to check the relevant boats and their captains some day.
At least U 250 and her captain Schmidt were not at Tallinn evacuation.

Re: The hospital ship Moero
Back to Moero
On Juha's link there are two drawings of attack on 22.nd of september 1944 by 51.MTAP and on the first drawing crew commanders of the planes are listed.
Orlenko I.F. - torpedo bomber (torpedonosec)
Relin M.?. - topmast bomber (topmachtovik)
Sazanov K.I. - leading bombardier (veadushi shturman) - as i understand this was the second torpedo bomber plane
Remizov ?.?. - top mast bomber(topmachtovik)
Orlenko was a regimental commander at the end of the war.
What was his function in september 1944?
Did he at the time of the Moero sinking flew A-20G-35-DO production number 43-10067 (plane he flew at the end of the war)?
Orlenko's plane (with his last crew) at the end of the war pic taken in Kolberg:

BTW
Orlenko wrote a couple of books (BTW books overlap):
Крылатые торпедоносцы - Krilatie torpedonosci - Winged torpedo carriers
can be found in russsian here:

Re: The hospital ship Moero
In september Orlenko was deputy commander. If you read russian, much better source than memoirs is M. Morozov's book about russian torpedo-bombers. Part of it (about Baltic) present on bellabs site.
