Kriegsmarine Occupations and Unit Organization

#1

Post by geahanse » 10 Apr 2014, 22:06

I am looking for information on all the Kriegsmarine occupational specialties including ones that don't involve being on a ship and units/organization for those who weren't on a ship or out to sea. For example, if someone had an administrative, supply, communication, medical, etc position, what type of unit and job would that be? I'm looking for a list perhaps, or something that explains all the jobs in the Kriegsmarine and how they're organized. Thanks

Can anyone help me with this please? Or at least guide me to where I can find information on this?

I think that is a very complex question to answer and I'm not even sure such a list is readily available.
As for what units would they serve in, it all depends - someone involved in communications for instance might be involved in a shore based artillery unit or a sea going destroyer or at a Headquarters. The same could be said pretty much for all the various trades. And because of the unit they could have more than one job - a mechanic on a U-Boat for instance might work in an engine room when he is on-duty but when he is off-duty he might be required to man one of the guns in times of action.

Have you tried to link the occupational specialities with the "specialist" badges that were authorised for the uniforms ?

As with the previous thread, your best option might well be to go to this site http://www.wwiidaybyday.com , go to the Uniform-Kriegsmarine section and go through each section within - especially the 2nd, 3rd & 4th links - to compile a listing of trades and admin officials (Beamte).

Hucks, thank you so much. You've been a lot of help. The wwiidaybyday.org helped a lot for the different occupational specialties. The only problem I had, was understanding some of them, even after I use a Web translator. Like the trade badges that are blue with red stitching, most of those don't translate but that's ok. I wish I knew german! As for the units, i found what I was looking for. If you're interested it is found at lexicon-der-wehrmacht.de
click kriegsmarine, then you'll see units and formations with everything I was talking about, I had to use a translator here but it all translated pretty well
