Need help with a MAP I have!

#1

Post by DCargentina » 03 May 2014, 17:31

Hello everyone I am new to the forum I already introduced myself in the introduction section.

I need help with something, it´s finding out what vessel is this map from. This was a gift from my father, he got it from someone that owed him a debt.

There's not much to go off of here except that it's a map of Cherbourg Bay and that it belonged to the Kriegsmarine. Are you able to make out what the faded words in the stamp are?

It looks to me like Kriegsmarinewerft Wilhelmshaven - Kartengruppe (not sure about the last) 'Map Section, Naval Yard Wilhelmshaven'
The enemy had superiority in numbers, his tanks were more heavily armoured, they had larger calibre guns with nearly twice the effective range of ours, and their telescopes were superior. 5 RTR 19/11/41

Yeah that sounds about right. It was probably printed off by the Map Division/Department at the Wilmshaven Naval Base but there's probably no telling what ships it was used on.

Nice KM map!..... "crumpled"/oil stained (when folded) with water stains & lots of character.... says "E-Boat or U-Boat" usage to me (anything larger had a "chart room" where maps were "well" kept).... (of course...unless marked, just speculation....but I've seen other KM definate U-Boat maps with similiar folds, water stains, and diesel smoke....!)

Nice find to any KM collector....

Was it a common thing that 1907 map has a swastika printed on it? Seems like WWII Kriegsmarine was using 30+ years old maps??? Perhaps seas and oceans did not change much from ice age, but surely strong currents and storms move constantly stuff around, specially in coastal areas, so depth info must be out of date. Poor U-boot commanders....

The Nazi Eagle and swastika did not exist yet. The swastika existed as a Germanic symbolism for good luck from rune script. But the Nazi party wasn't even around in 1907. It wasn't until 1920 that the nazi party adopted the swastika as a symbol of the aryan race.

The map is not from 1907. The data on it maybe. It says clearly 'Published by the High Command of the Kriegsmarine'. This means it is post-1935.

Yeah the area was most likely surveyed in 1907

:D
It says clearly 'Published by the High Command of the Kriegsmarine', BERLIN 1907, X - when you actually click on one of the pictures!

So it must be a post-1935 reprint of a 1907 map.
They added a swastika, but left original year in the oval legend.
