Thanks for all the pictures and information people! Talking about Neptun, there is a large pic of it showing up on tsushima forum, alongside a picture of fellow cable layer Norderau.

My friend Rand told me that a ship could both have served as tender and accomodation/target ship for the U-flotilla, which situation I guess ships like Heinz and Bokoburg belonged to :) In that case, the list of U-tenders could be significantly expanded.

No.9
These two pictures show diver support ships Togo and Seehund. Some unique equipments were red-circled, what were they? Were they oxygen tanks for divers?
The objects are very likely decompression chambers. The following from Wikipedia: "...a pressure vessel used in surface supplied diving to allow the divers to complete their decompression stops at the end of a dive on the surface rather than underwater. This eliminates many of the risks of long decompressions underwater, in cold or dangerous conditions."

Not that easy, there were six sisterships in the River-class of Norddeutscher Lloyd which had cranes in front of the bridge.
"Ems" became the auxiliary cruiser "Komet", "Lech" was not in home waters during the war, but was used for blockaderunning and so never had a camouflagescheme, and "Mur" was completed as "Sperrbrecher 32"
So we're left with three possibilities:
"Eider", "Iller" or "Drau" during her short period as cargoship from 1943 to 1944.
I would go for "Iller", but may be wrong.

Regarding the Iller, she is carrying, I believe, an icebreaking beam on the bow, however, does anyone know the reason for the vertical braces along her sides?

For my money, the device on the bow is part of the minesweeping gear, specificly the paravanes for cutting mine cables. The external braces would seem to be the external bracing holding a degaussing cable for neutralization of magmetic mines.
