Kriegsmarine WW2 Wall Plaque

#1

Post by Chico » 14 May 2016, 13:10

Hi

My father-in-law, Alf, served as a driver with the RASC and was a Desert Rat in WW2.

He picked up a wall plaque at the deserted Halfaya garrison when the RASC arrived. A picture is attached.

We now understand that it is a Kriegsmarine plaque. Alf says that there were very many plaques wrapped in tissue paper.

There was also many brand new sheepskin-lined leather back-packs lined up at the camp.

He came across a single seater light aircraft that had a high ranking German officer on board. He thinks that the officer had either taken a suicide pill or had been shot - but Alf didn't wait around to find out!!

Can anyone please give us any information about these plaques - and why they might have been at the garrison?

Or any info on the dead officer?

Alf is still alive and would appreciate any thoughts you might be able to give.

He attends the Desert Rats Memorial in Thetford each year and would love to be able to add this info to his war stories!

Many thanks.

Bryan

Hello Bryan,

I think this is a plaque from the 3. Schnellbootsflottille:

Hi Darius

Thank you for your reply.
The plaque is identical.
I am investigating the links at the War Relics site.
Regards
Bryan

This particular Schnellboot unit seemed to have many professionally designed plaques/ Wappen. This is a fine example. I of course, hope the swastika is just blackened /blued out using a filter and not on the actual plaque. This is a fine example. I wish I had one in my collection. Let me know if your father in law ever wants to sell it. :)

Best Regards,
