No, Polar Bear, it was not it The missing one was a captured former cruiser hulk, served in auxiliary role for brief time in the KM, pretty much rarely known.

the more or less only possibility (and that's still a guess) for that could be Italian FR.11 ex French Jean-de-Vienne from 9/43 to 11/43.

Alright, the asnwer is ex-ORP Baltyk, an old cruiser served in the Polish navy and then reclassified as barracks ship. She was captured by Germans in Polish campaign of 1939, used by Kriegsmarine as a barracks ship for a short time, then finally got scraped in 1942.

How many cruisers and ex-cruisers served during ww2 in German Kriegsmarine?

Building upon Polar Bear's list:
2 Pocket battleships (Admiral Scheer, Lützow), re-classified as cruiser in 1940
3 heavy cruisers Admiral Hipper-class
6 light cruisers (Emden, Karlsruhe, Köln, Königsberg, Leipzig, Nürnberg)
1 ex German, ex-Yugoslawian Gazelle-class cruiser (Niobe)
2 Hamburg-class ex-cruisers as support/barracks ships (Hamburg, Berlin)
2 Gazelle-class ex-cruisers as floating AAW batteries (Arcona, Medusa)
1 Gazelle-class ex-cruiser as barracks ship (Amazone)
1 Dutch ex-cruiser as AAW cruiser Niobe ex Gelderland)
plus
1 Polish ex-armoured cruiser as barracks ship before being scrapped in 1942 (ex-ORP Baltyk)
1 Danish ex-protected cruiser as barracks ship for German M-boat crews (ex-Hekla)
2 French/ex-Imperial German light cruisers as barracks ships for German U-boat crews before being scuttled to protect U-boat pens in 1944 (ex-French Strassburg/German Regensburg, ex-French Mulhouse/German Stralsund )

A total of 22 cruisers and ex-cruisers used by Kriegsmarine during ww2.

Not counting:
1. cruiser-equivalents not officially classified as cruisers.
2. cruisers and ex-cruisers used only as objects: floating targets, floating oil tanks, pontoons, blockships etc.
3. auxiliary cruisers and ex-auxiliary cruisers.
4. incompleted cruisers.

well .. not quite. During the Black Sea years: yes.

As it' "tough", one hint : Baltic in 1941, Arctic in 1942, Black Sea in 1943-44

OK, one week without response, so, another hints : (1) all 3 boats had a two-digit-number, the first digit being the same for all three.

(2) The boats belonged to 2nd flotilla in the Baltic, to 8th flotilla in the Arctic and to 1st flotilla in the Black sea.
