Kriegsmarine Funkmessträger (Radar Pickets).

I've changed the subject since the first one was misleading in relation to the message I was trying to convey. And from the marked lack of reactions i can also see that I failed miserably. The ships in question here were not "just" radar equipped, many KM ships were. The were radar equipped because they were part of the airwarning net. Their raison d'etre were to contribute to the production of the recognized air picture. They were in direct radio contact with a OZ or a FLUKO!

Aerial mine laying in the Baltic and in Danish Waters was a major operational problem for the Kriegsmarine throughout the war. Many of the Kriegsmarine radarstations on the Baltic Coast and in Denmark were established with the specific purpose of detecting minelaying aircraft. If the aircraft was tracked accurately, when the mine was dropped, it was actually possible to see two echoes and thus establish the drop position with a reasonable accuracy. This of course greatly facilitated subsequent mine sweeping. In order to improve the low level coverage a number of Wachschiffe were equipped with FuMB equipment, and a number of Vorpost Boote were equipped with FuMO 3 or FuMO 62 and FuMB equipment. Please see:

I would be grateful for comments, corrections and best of all additional illustrations.
The V 1601 Newhaven is a particular interesting vessel since it was intended to refit this vessel as Nachtjagdleitschiff Skagerak, but the plans were overtaken by "events".

Hi,
I have done an up-date to the above, describing the fate of V 1605.

Excellent collection of data. Just two small corrections:
the ships name was "Mosel", not "Mösel"
it was a steam fishing trawler, not a cargo ship

Even if she saw only some weeks of service, there was the Nachtjagdleitschiff "Kreta" (ex French "Lie de Beauté"), too. Or are you just concentrating on the ships outside the Mediterranean?

Hi Klaus,
It has been two years since my first post and now I get two responses in one night. Thank you for your corrections. My criteria for inclusion on this page is that if the prime purpose of the ship was to employ a radar it is included. The information I have is that the "Kreta" never became operational, but I am eager to get additional information/photos/drawings of this particular vessel.

Hi,
I have re-checked my sources and KRETA did indeed become operational, she was sunk 21 SEP 1943. I am very interested in illustrations and the operational history. In Hoffmann II/1 there is about 10 lines about the vessel.

Hi,
It has been a while, but to-day I came across a picture of Kreta 8-) What I presume is a Freya at the stern looks a bit odd.
