"Arbeit Macht Frei" Gate Door at Dachau Stolen
Saturday night, thieves stole the iron entry door at the Dachau "Jourhaus" camp entrance - the door with the famous "Arbeit Macht Frei" motto. (The actual motto letters were not originals - those had already been stolen in the 50s or 60s.)

Would have thought there'd be more comment on this; and coming after the recent theft of the Auschwitz sign

I am surprised it wasn't stolen sooner.

Its NOT the original sign anyway.
In 1945-46 a US G.I. stole the original and the US Army made a replacement (and it was noticeable in the "C"). The replacement sign was later replaced with a copy of the original.
The replacements replacement is what has been stolen.

I've started an English course at the memorial site for commercial tour guides (which I'm not) and took these pics of the gate Wednesday:

Do you happen to have a citation to a source/reference for the sign being stolen by a G.I. in 1945-46? I thought I had read it was in the 50s, but I can't find that now. I'd like to know for sure.
hanks!
