Heidelberg Heights artist up for prize
A Heidelberg Heights artist has become a finalist in one of Australia's richest art competitions with her portrayal of a German woman who committed war crimes.
Rebeccah Power was one of 25 artists selected for the 2012 Metro Art Award for her haunting watercolour, Hildegard, which she put together while living in Berlin late last year.
Power said the image was of Hildegard Kambach, who served as a guard at the German concentration camp Bergen-Belsen during World War II. Kambach was arrested for war crimes.
"I was fascinated by her story and did a lot of research on her," Power, 33, said.
The award is judged by a panel, which includes Archibald Prize winner Ben Quilty and former Victorian Premier Jeff Kennett.
