Actually it has little to do with fear of Prussian militarism, but with money. Berlin is too poor to build a fake palace for hundreds of millions just to have a fake palace.
A building must have a purpose. And there is a real need for centralized exhibition space for the SPK, and not much need for a faithful copy of the old city palace in itself.

Havin had lunch in the Palast der Republik in 1988 its too bad they took it down, the interior was dynamic and a sign of the time. Very Logan's Run.

I returned to the Schloss site today after 18 months, to find that work is well underway.
