Re: Translation Requests
I'm not sure what you mean by "sloppy." Also, you don't specify which flag is the one that looks sloppy. There are a couple of reasons why flag writing may appear to be poorly done. First of all, writing with a brush on a flag is difficult because of the absorbency of the fabric. The ink sometimes has a tendency to bleed. Secondly, many of the inscriptions on both flags are written in a cursive style of script known as sosho. Sosho is very fast, very loose, idiosyncratic, and often difficult to read. Sosho bears little resemblance to the kaisho style script which is used in books and other media.jeeplover wrote:why is the kanji on the one flag look so sloppy...

Re: Translation Requests
It would mean the style of writting. On the first flag, the slogan of Buun Chokyo was written in Sosho(Cursive script) . It looks sloppy for him.

There is no date and no name of senders or receivers on these flags.

Re: Translation Requests
thank you very much . so it is just a different style of writing. I had not seen a flag in this style before. what do the flags say?
Re: Translation Requests
if I have offended anyone it was not my intention and I am very sorry.
Re: Translation Requests
I did a some looking and from what I found this style of writing is only done by a person with skills to do it,
again I did not mean to offend.

Re: Translation Requests
Sosho is quite difficult to read. Only with a lack - not only good, but very good - we hit on a correct idea.
In the right column we see something of 汁. With some of best luck I enjoyed these several years, I noticed that it is 計. Then this line must be - still I cannot explain why I thought so - 愛知時計電機(Aichi Tokei Denki).
In some years after Meiji Restoration, Aichi prefecture (including Nagoya city) was a center of clock (not watch) industry. But clock was rather a simple product, so rapidly competitors in Southeast Asia had beaten them down (Seiko started as a watch retailer and had nothing to do with Aichi). For their survival, many small firms became parts suppliers for Mitsubishi, and eventually Toyota. But ATD found their way in producing water mater, gas mater etc. Also later they produced fuse for the army.
The first two chars on the second column reads 瑞穂(Mizuho), a location in Nagoya, where ATD had one of its factories. Two small lines in the end of this column reads 一年一同 三年一同 ([from] 1st grade students, 3rd grade students). I assume ATD maintained a technician training night school in its Mizuho factory, and a trainer was named for service in the army or navy. So students prepared it.
For another flag I cannot say anything. Names are given simply one after another with no special hint.
