2. Navy crew 2

Sailors of the same service year on BB(BC until 1931) Kongo.

1. Navy crew 1

Clearly this ship had only one twin-turret on front deck (rear? i am not sure). So it was not Nagato, nor Kongo. Older configuration, pre-Dreadnought or armored cruisers. So I guess this pic was taken on one of obsolete training ships, when respective trainees are assigned to warships. The owner seemed to be allotted to Kongo.

The first char reads 長 but I am not sure for the rest. It looks 一(one) plus some unreadable char, or the whole was an unreadable char. The rough writing of 門 was different but the seller assumed 長※ must be 長門.

All IJN ship was registered (鎮守府籍) to one Chinjufu. Warrant officers, petty officers and sailors were transferred among ships of the same registration (to minimize relocation of families). Until 1935 both Kongo and Nagato registered in Yokosuka, then Kongo moved to Sasebo. So if the man moved to Nagato by 1935 it was natural that he had other pics related to Nagato.

WWII Japanese cap found on Tarawa by a 2nd Marine regiment marine. What is the name translated to? I thought it was Mr. Hotta? Any help would be wonderful. Thank you very much.

堀田計芳 is hard to read. A possible reading is Hotta Kazuyoshi but I am far from sure.
Issued for him in May 1942 from supply department, Kure Chinjufu. His nyuseki bango (sailor ID number) barely reads Belonged to Sasebo naval district, volunteer, combat arm. Tarawa's garrison was from Yokosuka and Sasebo.

Actually, this ship can be only "Kongo"-class, which had turret #4 located away from turret #3. See attached photo of "Hiei", where I've marked the place, where photo was taken, with red arrow.

Taking into account, that both photos have at least two common faces, it is definitely "Kongo". Unfortunately, I'm not a specialist on those ships, but it seems that photo was made after large modernization in mid-1930th

Hi all,

I posted this to the Translation Help forum earlier today, but thought I'd add it here as well.

I recently picked up a USMC veteran's scrapbook on eBay, and included loose in the pages was this Japanese data plate. Wondering if anyone can help translate it. (Vet has a few personal pictures of wrecked Japanese aircraft on Okinawa, perhaps it's from one of those?)

Thanks in advance!

Thank you, hisashi!

The veteran had a photo Ki-21 #546 of the Daisan Dokuritsu Hikōtai, that crash landed on Yontan. It's taken from an angle unlike any I'd seen before (and a bit out of focus, not a professional photo!) so I think he took the picture himself, and was hoping the plate came from that aircraft. Ah well! Appreciate your help as always.

Good day to one and all I am working on a project and need to find out what the proper words of command for foot drill and rifle drill are ? I need to be able to pronounce it in Japanese and write it phonetically in English. And if anyone has a copy of or can point me in the right direction for pictures of the different body positions during foot and rifle drill that would be most appreciated. Anything I've been able to find online and at the library has been vague at best.
Thanks in andvance

Hello,

I have got this album some time ago, but do not have any information regarding this exact railroad guard division. The dealer gave some description regarding the album in japanese, but the google translator translates horrible:

Also i attach some photos from the album with wordings. Could you, please, translate main points and explain what division is that, where it was located. Thank you.

The words of command are written in the text. Make them translated by somebody who can speak Japanese.

It was a navy equipment, but common in most aircraft up to three seat. So I guess it was from another navy wreck.

Manshu 805 unit =Independent Infantry 580th battalion. Raised in Dec 1933 for the border to Soviet. Participated in the battle of Khalkhin Gol. Later joined to Amphibious 1st brigade as its 3rd battalion. Shuttered in Eniwetok, Feb 1944.

Group Photo:

In general a number of infantries, typically in HQ section of each company, served as gas specialists, detecting and detoxing the gas. Annual training course for gas specialists was held from Dec 1940 to Feb 1941. Lt.Kawashima and Sgt.Hosokawa trained them and took this photo on finishing the course. Kondo Seiji? seemed the album owner(soldier).

Lt.Col:

9th anniversary for the unit, namely Dec 1942.

near the monument:

Monument was built for 1940 (2600th anniversary for legendary Japanese imperial reign). 八紘一宇 =all eight direction to one roof (wartime slogan to unify the world to one authority).

桐木中佐=Lt.Col.Kiriki. 7th leader?

HQ senior adjutant (of unknown HQ, Kondo seemed not to know his name)
