This is a bit of an obscure question, but y'all are my best hope for answering it.

I'm curious what role the Grand Canal played in the China Incident. Was it important for either Japanese or Chinese military communications? Did the Japanese patrol the Canal after overrunning that part of China, and, if so, with what kind of craft?

Thanks for any help you can provide. Pointers to reliable sources are particularly welcome.
