Probably, it is 九月六日着手(Begin on Sept. 6th).

Hisashi & Taki - Thank you for your help. Domo Arigato. The Tanabe City mentioned here is probably in Wakayama. I know that most of my family are from Wakayama prefecture. The name is not familiar to me, but I will ask my aunt if she has heard those names before.

These are the backs of 3 pictures of the same person I believe. In 2 of the pictures he is wearing an army uniform similar to what the IJA was wearing at the time of the Russo - Japanese war. One of the pictures is dated 1903 and another one is dated either 1903 or 1905.

This last military photo shows a man dressed in a Japanese Navy uniform. Looks like from about the same time period as the others.

So this pic was taken at Kobe before his departure to war. He asked to pass it to a friend of him but small note seemed missed.

??? 栄吉君 [Mr. ??? Eikichi]
I cannot read this family name.
於 清国旅順口 At Port Arthur, Qing

栄吉君 looks a receiver of this pic. The man who gave it do not appear on the letter. Maybe close friend/relative. I have no Idea why several years after the war he sent it to Eikichi.

Hisashi san - Domo Arigato. Your help is greatly appreciated.

The Eikichi mentioned here is my late Grandfather. All of these photos belonged to him, but he does not appear of any of these pictures.

Could the family name mentioned be "Tanida" or "Tanita" ?

Aha, yes yes. The mysterious letter reads 呈谷田栄吉君 (Presented to Mr.Tanida Eikichi). Reading Tanida is perhaps common in comparison with Tanita but I am not sure about any specific case.

No.1 Maintenance chief and his egg (=apprentice)
No.2 Lt.Yamashita
No.3 2nd Lt. Okuno (he was the 'egg')
No.4
Yamashita was sitting on the grass calmly
I found in this silent scene
he, Yamashita working with black [dust and oil] at Ayer Tawar

Ayer Tawar, northern Malaysia, appears in the air combat record of IJA air force. A RAF airfield seemed to be there and to be used by IJA.

Here is the picture of the IJN sailor which the reverse side was translated above. What is written on his cap ? Do the medals he is wearing have any significance ? As far as his rank - is he just a common sailor ? We are still trying to identify this person. Thanks.

These 2 images I think might be the names of a person or persons related to the IJN sailor. Thanks.

竹敷要港部 (takeshiki navy port office) in the reverse order. This office existed from 1896 to 1912 at Tsushima Island, to maintain a naval port there.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Takeshiki_Guard_District
I think 'guard district' for 要港部 is not a good translation because it cares the port itself and was not basically a combat organ.

Left honor seems 勲八等白色桐葉章, a common honor for sailor/soldier. Especially in wartime, It was awarded for his service for some years. His cap was for a sailor, not for a petty officer.
