Ok, there is no problem. I know that you have some difficulties about it that's why it's almost like guessing. :)

This forum has its value as a library. One person asks and others reply.. but it is only the beginning. Whenever somebody in the world asked something on IJA&IJN issues she/he find threads here, and often accept the replies as truth. Frequently we see questions 'Which is correct?' but the stem of questions of that kind lies in typo, poor research, poor knowledge and guesswork on issues the teller himself is not sure of. I don't want to use my time for guesswork and I want to minimize guesswork here in this forum.

Hi,
I found on Amazon a nice offer for Senshi Sosho title but I have a huge problem about two kanji:
豪北方面陸軍作戦
I couldn't find both of them in my tools and what's even worse - some webpages decribe this book as someting connected with "Australia" or "New Guinea" what is impossible for me. 豪 (what?) kita (north)?

Thank you in the advance! :)

Hello Piegziu,

The direct English translation of 豪北 is "the area north from Australia". (Japanese people call Australia 豪州.)
Specifically, it is the area from Dutch East Indonesia to Western New Guinea.

Thank you fontessa. So the descriptions were right.

Souldn't it be 北豪 (kita/hōku - north first) as a primary description of direction/possesion?

Just like in the image:

There are many example of Japanese and Chinese words in which 'place' +'direction' =a part of place in the direction.
華北=Northern China
洛北= Northern part of Kyoto
道北 = Northern part of Hokkaido
山東= East of the mountain(Mount Tai) = Shandong Province, China
広西 =Western Half of 広州 =Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region,China
広東 =Eastern Half of 広州 = Guandong Province. China

Hello, I was wondering if someone could help me translate this Hinomaru Yosegaki I obtained sometime ago. Unfortunately this flag is extremely weathered and the majority of the ink is very faded. I was able to recognize the two bu un cho kyu. I was wondering what the other large writing on the right half of the flag said? Thanks in advance!

帝國在郷軍人會 片平村分會
片平村 (Katahira Village) was a farm village, now a part of Koriyama city, Fukushima prefecture. 帝國在郷軍人會=veterans' association, 分會=branch.

So this flag was presented from local group of veterans, perhaps for a called-up reserve of unknown name.

Hello! Please help to read and translate these texts. What's going on in this photo? Naval funeral ceremony?

Thanks in advance!

Best regards,

the word 霊前 (for dead(s)) repeatedly appears. But I guess it was not a person's memorial, but memorial for fallen sailors from Yokosuka chinjufu. I feel nothing inevitable personal in a funeral, say, gifts/flowers from her/his relatives.

9 霊前 軍艦 壱岐 (BB Iki) ex-Russian ship Imperator Nikolai I. After 1910 CO Kaiheidan, Yokosuka Chinjufu concurrently took on thet skipper for her. Kaiheidan was a sailor training organ/personnel pool, so in effect she served as a training ship.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_ba ... _Nikolai_I

2 and 7 海軍大佐今井兼胤 Capt.Imai Kanetane was CO Yokosuka Kaiheidan from Dec 1912 to May 1914.
1 and 8 霊前 要港部 施設部 高等官 Kotokan(高等官) was official's grade, roughly equivalent to 'officers' in military. Perhaps several civilian officials donated. 要港部 would be a misswriting for 港務部, harbor master's office. 施設部 was a facilities/construction office, both under Chinjufu.

3 and 6 海軍中将男爵鹿野勇之進 VAdm Baron Kano Yunoshin when Imai took command of Iki he was already retired. He spent long days as an leader of administrative section and also the commander of chinjufu and other bases, including CO Yokosuka Kaiheidan.

4 and 5 I can only read 海軍中将男爵, but these might be also 海軍中将男爵鹿野勇之進. Two pair of donated goods looked unusual and I don't know why.

Hello Hisashi!

Many thanks for your help wit this photo! But whose names listed - people who donated to this memorial or names of fallen sailors? Any guess what conflict was this where they lost their lives? WWI?

Best regards,
Alexander

Apparently they were donors. Perhaps this special tent and facilities, only for military use, was prepared in Yokosuka chinjufu or any shrine nearby. But CO Yokosuka chinjufu was not interested in this ceremony. So little number of persons backed this event.
