Re: Translation Requests
Aha, it's a extra rare name. Most Japanese including myself cannot read this name. I just found my answer from google.
Japanese wikipedia states his name as Kunishi Goshichi. No trustful source found but Kunishi family is a local surname and a group of Kunishis served for Choshu-Han and Goshichi's father-in-law (Goshichi was an adopted son) was a Choshu-Han samurai. So this pronunciation looks persuasive.

Re: Translation Requests
Hello everyone,
Here is another flag from my collection, I am researching. I do see a rather small Ki Buun choukyuu, "prayers for everlasting fortune in battle"at the top center, but thats the only thing I recognise. Any help in translating / understanding anything on this flag would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for you help!

Re: Translation Requests
Paulg,
This flag is extra rich in information in comparison with many similar hinomaru.
The man who received this flag was 藤原信行君 (Mr. Fujiwara Nobuyuki). And in the right end,
宇佐神宮参拝戦勝祈願記念
昭和十六年十二月八日
reads that this flag was a memorial of the visit and pray for victory at Usa Jingu Shrine(宇佐神宮) in 8 Dec 1941. Note that Pearl Harbor Attack was in Japan at dawn of 8 Dec, not 7 Dec. On 祈武運長久 at center-above, you read four-character stamp 宇佐神宮. 神 is an old style of 神.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usa_jing%C5%AB
In the left-below I read
大分縣杵築町 Oita Prefecture, Kitsuki Town
松村旭富 Matsumura Akitomi(?) I am not sure.
Kitsuki Town is about 30km distant from Usa.
Many navy men signed.
海軍一等整備兵 navy aircraft maintenance sailor, 1st class
海軍水兵長 navy senior sailor
海軍上等水兵 navy senior sailor (old class name)
海軍二等兵曹 navy petty officer, 2nd class
But Matsumura seemed not a navy man. Left-above message reads
為国に生きる Living for the nation
産業戦士 an industrial warrior
幸運を祈りて Praying your good luck
Sangyo Senshi (industrial warrior) was a common wartime expression for a war contributor in manufacturing or mining. So he seemed mobilized as a civilian in the beginning of war, say, oil refining specialist or aviation mechanic advisor from Mitsubishi bra bra.

Re: Translation Requests
Jeeplover,
This is a map for civilian use, published in Feb 1945. The publisher 興亜協調会 seems a civilian organ gathering geographical data and had published similar railroad/travel maps from before the war.

Re: Translation Requests
Wow, Thank you Hisashi for that information! A flag that was dedicated on the morning of the Pearl Harbor attack is just incredible. That makes it a very special flag for me. Your help with and understanding of these flags is a tresured resource indeed

Hello Everyone,
Here is a flag that I don't have much history on. I am curious if this flag can tell us anything? There is an area that almost looks like a poem or long saying. Maybe its just names. This site has been a tremendous help to me in researching my collection, and am very thankful for that. Taki and Hisashi have been an invaluable resource, thank you both! If there is anything you can tell me about this flag, please do. Thank You
