Any sources in English to recommend for info on Japanese naval signals intel. I'm after details on the effectivness of the signals analysis detachements aboard the fleet during operations in 1941-42. Thanks for any leads or if any experts wish to post something here.

Japanese Intelligence in World War II by Ken Kotani has some information on IJN sigint efforts. You can find a review here: https://www.cia.gov/library/center-for- ... ar-ii.html
Used copies are inexpensive. it is an interesting book even if it turns out to not have exactly what you need.

Possibly helpful: I'm processing SRH-406 right now. Waiting on a few missing pages from the source.

Wow, I'm looking forward to seeing it on the website. Good work. Since SRH-406 consists our intercepts of Japanese Navy messages from around September to December 1941, I'm not sure as to what light it might shed on Japanese SIGINT efforts.

SRMA-005 Enemy Analysis of Allied Communications, 15 December 1944 (36 pages) may also be relevant. This one is available from NARA.

Realistically the best source is the real thing: JACAR. The site also contains actual message traffic recorded among the various fleets as well as their own naval sigint efforts.

Ken Kotani's book is of almost no value whatever in this area, I can tell you.

I can agree with cstunts.

If you are looking for information on Japanese naval Intelligence, Ken Kotani's book has very little to offer. A great great deal of the book is concerned with Japanese army & navy intelligence prior to December 7, 1941 - so, in a way, the title of the book is actually a misnomer.

Carl, Here is another possible source: SRH-254 ULTRA report on The Japanese Intelligence System MIS/WSGS, 4 September 1945 (172 pages). Available from NARA (RG 457) and the Naval Historical Foundation http://www.navyhistory.org/documentservice.html.
