Hello Fontessa,

Does JACAR shed any light on deployment of anti-aircraft artillery units (both IJA and IJN) in Nagasaki-ken around July through September 1945?

thank you,

Hello Wellgunde:

According to JACAR C08010924500, the deployment of Sasebo Navy Guard Unit’s AA guns was as follows.

15.5 cm AA gun X 4:
12.7 cm twin AA guns x 2:
12.7 cm twin AA guns x 2:
12.7 cm twin AA guns x 3:
12.7 cm twin AA guns x 2:
12.7 cm twin AA guns x 2:
12.7 cm twin AA guns x 3:
12.7 cm twin AA guns x 2:
10 cm twin AA guns x 4:
10 cm twin AA guns x 2:
10 cm twin AA guns x 3:

I was surprised that 15 cm AA guns had deployed in Nagasaki-ken. As for the Army, only two 15 cm AA guns deployed at Kugayama, Tokyo at the end of the war.

Unfortunately similar data for the Army AAA units is not left. The 134th AAA Regiment was stationed in Nagasaki-ken.

They were originally main guns of Mogami-class cruiser. Because Mogami-class was upgraded to 20cm gun cruiser, 15cm guns were removed. In the late WWII, 15cm guns in stock were converted to ground AA guns. I upload a photo of 15cm AA gun deployed at 崎針尾村.

Good morning Taki:

Thanks for the correction and the information. Do you know the number of Mogami class cruiser's main guns which were converted to AA guns?

When the Mogamis were re-gunned, there were 20 triple 6.1-inch turrets available. The original plan was to use 16 of the turrets (four turrets each) for the secondary guns of the four planned Yamato-class battleships, with the remaining four (two turrets each) allotted to the two planned Oyodo-class light cruisers. In the end, only ten of the turrets were used in this manner, eight for Yamato and Musashi and two for Oyodo, with the rest probably converted to AA guns, along with the four turrets removed from the two battleships during their AA gun refits mid-war. Hope this helps.

Thank you Taki and Fontessa for this excellent information.

A Japanese person of my acquaintance is convinced that there was an artillery emplacement of some kind definitely located at 佐世保市山祗町 and also possibly on 烏帽子岳 at the end of the war. This person lived in 山祗町 so the memories are very strong even after sixty-nine years. These are both higher elevations so they would have been logical choices for AAA emplacements although I doubt that they would have made any difference as to the outcome of the two B-san raids directed against Sasebo.

Hello Wellgunde:

12.7 cm twin AA guns x 2:
12.7 cm twin AA guns x 3:
12.7 cm twin AA guns x 2:
12.7 cm twin AA guns x 2:
12.7 cm twin AA guns x 2:
10 cm twin AA guns x 2:
10 cm twin AA guns x 2:

Although Wikipedia says that there was a battery in 烏帽子岳, I could not find it in the document I have referred to.

Thanks again, Fontessa.

This photo was taken on Mt. Yumihara (弓張) in Sasebo. It is reputed to be the remains of an AA emplacement. I visited Mt. Yumihara last October (spectacular views) but did not see or know of the existence of this location.

Fontessa,

It was decided that more than 25 15cm guns were converted to AA guns. But, it is unknown exactly how many of them were actually converted. Besides four 15cm AA guns at 崎針尾村, one 15cm AA gun and one triple-15cm gun turret were deployed near Kure. One AA gun is found on the photo of Kure Arsenal taken by the Americans after the war ended.

Hello Wellgunde:

I found the web site below.
http://www17.big.or.jp/~father/aab/aab.html
This site bases on JACAR (Delivery List), which shows the kind of AA guns, and the locations of batteries.
In earlier post, I quoted 引渡目録’s Sasebo Guard Unit part. (JACAR C08010924500)

The web site has links to following
Kure and Tokuyama Guard Unit
Sasebo Guard Unit
Yokosuka Guard Unit
Maizuru Guard Unit

According to the above, 15.5 cm AA guns deployed as follows.
■ Kure Guard Unit
- Triple guns: 冠崎 (As Taki posted)
- Single gun:
■ Sasebo Guard Unit
- 4 Single guns:
■ Yokosuka Guard Unit
- 2 Single guns:
■ Maizuru Guard Unit
- None
