Canton Garrison HQ

Post by Joan Pinyol » 16 Sep 2014, 19:57

Col Takeo Manjome was appointed CO of the Canton Guard or Garrison HQ in February 1942. I have not found any other reference to this unit. Probably it was assigned to 23rd Army, and probably it was disbanded or converted to another kind of brigade-size unit in April 1944. Its composition (line of communication guard units or independent infantry battalions) is unknown.

Thanks in advance for your comments and suggestions.

Hello Joan,

Wasn't it (広東警備隊 Canton Guard Unit) a Navy unit?
Please see 第二遣支艦隊 of the web page below.

It existed to the end of the war.

万城目武雄 (Manjome Takeo) was officially attached to 23rd Army HQ. Against his title 広東市特別警備司令官 he seemed to have no unit permanently attached to him. At first independent 66th infantry battalion moved from mid-China to Canton city. In 1943 22th IMB was raised there with new battalions and 66th. Its CO, Col.Segawa Masao (瀬川正雄) was junior to Manjome, so I assume Segawa reported Manjome on the security of Canton.

In Apr 1944 22th IMB was deployed in front-line mission, and Manjome moved to Philippine where he commanded 78th brigade, 102th division. 広東市特別警備司令官 seemed no more to be named. For a while I am not sure which unit was responsible for there. In Apr 1945 130th division was raised to defense Canton area.

It explains the gap in the assignments of 66th IIB from 27 Jan 1942 to 27 Nov 1942.
