#1

Post by Leo Niehorster » 10 Oct 2014, 20:49

Greetings,
I am looking for information regarding the oiler / seaplane carrier / flying boat tender KAMOI.

1/ The captains:
Capt Matsuda Risaburo (32)  松井利三郎  from 20.05.26– until when?
Capt Ishikawa Shingo (33)  石川信吾   from 01.11.26– until when?
Capt Fujioka Seiji (33)  藤岡晴次   from 01.12.27– until when?
Capt Mitsunami Teizo (37)  三並貞三   from 01.12.31– until when?
I am also missing the officer commanding from 25.01.32 (who is 北条釐三郎 ?)
I am missing all the captains between 03.05.43 and 08.04.45. (The last one I have is Capt Yamazaki Sukeichi (39)  山崎助一  07.08.42–03.05.43)

2/ The subordination between 12.09.1922 and 15.11.1939. (I do have the higher commands after this date.)

Can anyone assist?

Leo

The remarkably sinister Ishikawa Shingo was absolutely not a Captain in this time period. In fact he was still a mere lieutenant. And if he was ever skipper of KAMOI, it does not appear in his career records on the internet. I would have to review my hard-copies of his actual Japanese (IJN) service records to say for certain, but I am skeptical about this. He should have been undertaking his A-course Naval College studies then.

Not sure what the (33) after his name is for either. What does that mean? It's obviously not his ki number.

The number in brackets is the graduating class of the Naval Academy at Etajima. Makes locating the correct officer somewhat easier.
This Ishikawa Shingo graduated in November 1905, so by 1926, (21 years later), he could well have been a captain.

Leo,

It's not Ishikawa Shingo at all, but perhaps it is Ishikawa Tetsuhiro from Ibaraki. He was a CMDR in that period, but no evidence he weas skipper of KAMOI. to make it all even more confusing there was also a Ichikawa Daijiro (from Mie) in that same ki...

I also have an Ishikawa Shingo from Eta Jima 33 as CO for this period. There was likely more than one officer by that name that served in the IJN; in fact, there were two officers by the name of Nakamura Noboru that graduated from Eta Jima Class 50 (not joking here), so two Ishikawa Shingos from different classes is a highly-plausible case.

Secondly, Leo, what subordinates are you looking for during that period? I've got some info, but it's not complete.

Finally, here's a list of the captains you were asking about:

CAPT Matsui Saburo (32) - 20 May 1926 - 1 November 1926
CAPT Ishikawa Shingo (33) - 1 November 1926 - 25 June 1927
CAPT Kohiyama Shinji (33) - 25 June 1927 - 1 December 1927
CAPT Fujioka Tsugiharu (33) - 1 December 1927 - 4 December 1928

CAPT Mitsunami Teizo (37) was NEVER CO of Kamoi. The COs for this time period were as follows:

CDR Sugiura Shinpei (36) - 1 December 1930 - 1 April 1931
CDR Honda Genzo (32) - 1 April 1931 - 25 January 1932

The CO you're inquiring about on 25 January 1932 is:

CAPT Hojo Rinsaburo (35) - 25 January 1932 - 15 November 1932

And finally, the wartime COs you're missing are:

CAPT Shimizu Takeo (39) - 3 May 1943 - 5 December 1944
CAPT Fujimaki Yoshiro (46) - 5 December 1944 - 13 April 1945

Hope this helps; perhaps you can help me out with one for Kamoi as well...might you have her CO from 7 December 1929 - 1 December 1930?

Hi,

I have CDR Sugiura Shinpei (36) as CO from 7 Dec 1929 - 1 Apr 1931, but I can't now find the source. :(

As regards subordination, this is the little I have:

July 1933: Combined Fleet
1 December 1936: 12th Squadron
15 November 1939: 17th Squadron

Very best regards,

VJK

@ ijnfleetadmiral:
Many thanks, indeed, for filling the gaps.
Egg on my face. Missed the fact that I am missing the officer between 07.12.29 and 01.12.31.

@VJK
I have Capt Sugiura Shinpei 杉浦信平 (36) as commanding 01.12.30–01.04.31.
Granted, it would be nice if he did command from as early 07.12.29.

Cheers

I take it the two names are for the same officer?

Capt Matsuda Risaburo  松井利三郎 (32)  20.05.26–00.00.00
and
  CAPT Matsui Saburo (32)  20.05.26–01.11.26
