5 15 Incident Books

Post by Langstrom » 03 Jul 2015, 18:22

Hello,

I am looking for any English language books that deal with the 5 15 Incident of 1932. Most books dealing with this period brush over the attempted coups and assassinations quickly, so I am looking for something more extensive. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Unlike the better known 2-26 incident, I don't know of any book or journal article that deals specifically with the Inukai assasination.

Unfortunately, I'm maxed out on free JSTOR articles at the moment, so I can't say how in depth its specific coverage of the Inukai assassination is, but you might want to try: "Nationalist Extremism in Early Shōwa Japan: Inoue Nisshō and the 'Blood-Pledge Corps Incident', 1932," by Stephen S. Large, Modern Asian Studies, Vol. 35, No. 3 (Jul., 2001), pp. 533-564. You can read it for free through JSTOR if you have or create a JSTOR account: http://www.jstor.org/stable/313180

Stephen,

Thanks for the info on JSTOR and Modern Asian Studies. Is JSTOR free? Another great source focused only on Japan is The Journal of Japanese Studies. I've been a subscriber for many years and highly recommend it.

Wellgunde,

JSTOR has limited free access. How it works is that, after creating an account, you can put up to three articles on your account's "shelf" and then you read the articles from the "shelf." However, once you put an article on your "shelf," you have to wait fourteen days before you can remove it from the "shelf" and add another article. You are thus limited to roughly six to nine articles a month (assuming you add and remove them as quickly as it permits). I will note also that with a free account you can't print the articles and certain articles cannot be read for free on-line, but probably 90%+ of the articles that I've been interested have been available to read for free.
