Yokosuka Club Alliance

#1

Post by Wellgunde » 22 Feb 2016, 03:01

The attached photo is a picture of the Club Alliance taken around 1949. The club consists of the two large multi-storied buildings in the background. From around 1947 to 1980, Club Alliance was the largest U.S. Navy enlisted club in the world. The club was located in the city of Yokosuka about one quarter mile from the main gate of the Yokosuka Navy Base. Some sources say that before the end of the war it was an IJN enlisted club; others that it was an IJN enlisted club. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who knows its true origin and perhaps when it was constructed. The base is just out of view to the left of the photo. The street in the foreground leads to the Japan National Railways Yokosuka station which is behind the photographer's point of view. In front of the club runs Japan National Route 16 which is the main road from Yokosuka to Yokohama. TIA.

Club Alliance was the Navy enlisted mans club in the 1960s and 1970s but I think it was open to all ranks and services - It was located with in the Yokosuka Naval Base.

I was at C-FAY from '81 to '83 then visited again around 1985. The new(er) enlisted club they built in that interval was quite impressive.

The first Club Alliance, shown in the photos above, was converted in 1947 by the U.S. Navy into an Enlisted Men's Club. It was open to all enlisted ranks. The club was located outside the precincts of Commander Fleet Activities Yokosuka (i.e. Yokosuka Naval Base). On base, there was also a Petty Officer's Club, a Chief Petty Officer's Club, and an Officer's Club. Sometime in the early 1980's, the Club Alliance was returned to Japan. It is now the site of a large department store. A new, but much smaller, Club Alliance was constructed for enlisted personnel just inside the main gate.

The United States Navy, in order to soothe the pride of its various allies, never designates its foreign holdings as bases. They are always referred to as fleet activities, facilities, stations, or similar terms.

I visited Yokosuka many times between 1967 and 2013.
