[split from the Quiz section-Peter H]

Aside this quiz game, I'm writing an article about Thailand in WW2, and find some high quality pictures of Royal Thai Navy warships, such as HTMS Dhunburi, HTMS Sri Ayuthaiya, HTMS Maeklong and HTMS Machanu class submarines.

PS, Dhunburi and Ayuthaya are two former capitals of Siamese/Thai ancient dynasties. Dhunburi locates just westwards to Bangkok, across Chao Phraya River.

Thanks Windward for the pics :)

Besides the 8) soundind name of the Thai (Siamese?) coast defence ship it interests me as it's a bit similar as our Finnish coast defence ships Väinämöinen and Ilmarinen

Specially interesting is that both the Finnish and Thai ships were Diesel powered (our actually Diesel-electric).

I happen to have few Swedish origin books about world navies: "Marine Kalender" (from 1938 to today). The statistics of Thai torpedoboats of
Trad/Trat class ( 318t, 31knots, 3x75/76, 2x20, 2xmg, 6x450TT) and
Kantan class ( 110t, 18knots, 1x75, 2x20, 2x450TT)
sound intersting. Do you have any pics of them?

Regards, Juha

The Finnish dual were success design for the purpose they were assigned. I think the reason you feel them similar was they all have two turrets and box shape. Compare them with the slim Swedish one, coastal battleship Sverige.

As I know the main gun of Dhunburi still existing, which been used as training material in Thailand navy at least in late 1990s. Also I remember in one of Jp magazine, there are photos of them....

The Thonburi guns were a Japanese model, the 200mm gun also mounted aboard Akagi and Kaga. There were many surplus barrels at the time because early heavy cruisers had changed over to the 203mm gun and the carriers had also landed some.
There's a very nice memorial in Thailand in which the superstructure and turrets of a coast defense ship have been laid out on a plot resembling the ship's deck. Unfortunately, the guns are touched with rust on the inside, and the breech mechanisms appear to have been removed.

OOB for RTNAF

#12

Post by Gary Childress » 17 Sep 2006, 23:37

Does anyone know off hand or else of a good website that would give the OOB for the Royal Thai Naval Airforce in WW2? If I'm not mistaken they only used float planes like the Dave, Jake etc. but how many squadrons were there and how many planes of what type for each squadron and where were these units stationed on Dec 22, 1941?

I'm particularly interested in the OOB for Dec 22, 1941 which, if I'm not mistaken, is the date they allied with the Japanese.

I'm looking for this info regarding a mod I'm working on for a pc game.

Thanks for any help.

Thank you for the reply Andy H! Isn't the 5th air wing part of the RTAF though? I was looking for info on the naval air force.

I visited these forums a while back and someone on them had a friend who hosts this site: http://www.geocities.com/thailandwwii/oob.html?200618 So I think I have the regular air force nailed down fairly well. Using the web site you mention above I get the impression that a typical squadron had a standard strength of 9 planes.

I just can't find anything on the naval air force float planes and such. I assume the navy air force consisted of patrol planes and little else? I've combed Google as best I know how and have come up empty so far. :(

BTW, HTMS Mae Klong has been in used for about 60 year the "teacher ship" until the final retirement around 1996.

It has been plinted at Fort Chulachomklao ever since.

The other ship that escape for fate of being uder the blazing torch or being a bombing target is HTMS Chumporn which has been retired in 1980 ... by the request of the Governor of Chumporn ... This torpido ship has been plinted near Admiral Prince Abhakorn Shrine.

Armiral prince Bhakorn is cosidred as the father of Modern Thai Navy.
