Japanese:Boxer Rebellion 1900
Osprey's The Boxer Rebellion,by Lynn Bodin, mentions that two Japanese divisions served in China in 1900.
One was the 2nd Sendai Division.Does anyone know the number of the other division sent?

Hi Peter!
According to this site, it wasn't actually the Boxers who killed Sugiyama:

Re: Japanese:Boxer Rebellion 1900
Coming very late to this one, can I ask Lt Amuro, if he is still around, for some help? Does he have any further information on the Japanese forces in the Boxer Uprising, please? I am writing a book on the armies of the conflict, and the Russian, Chinese and Japanese have proved the most difficult to get primary source material on, because of the language problem.
I have a chapter on the Japanese virtually complete, but some of the organisational details are contradictory, and it would be very helpful to have an expert eye cast over them. Any help will, of course, be fully acknowledged in the book.
Regards
Mike

From wikipedia.
Look like the Japanese naval soldiers involved in the 55 day Seige of Peking. But this party only comprised 25 men so this photo might have been taken later when they were reinforced.

In your 12 April 2009 post, are you sure those are Japanese sailors? The Japnese Army used a white sumer unform that wasn't replaced until the RJW (the first khaki was the dyed white uniform). I don't see any uniform detail that indicate Navy. Of course, I could be in error.
Thanks!
Jeff
